2 nd Technical Consultation on Marine Information Management and Dissemination in Europe 6 / 16 Lisbon, 9 November 2009 Economic challenges that correspond to: the agenda set out by the Aho Group (3% GDP goal) supply-side measures for promotion of RTD demand-side measures to create innovation-friendly markets Science and technology: basis of challenges involving the collective ability to respond to opportunities in frontier research Social and environmental challenges: dealing with the causes and consequences of issues such as climate change, food & energy security and the ageing society for these the initial drive will have to come from governments What are (could be?) these major societal challenges? http://ec.europa.eu/research/era/pdf/eg7-era-rationales-final-report_en.pdf Report of the ERA Expert Group (2008)

2 nd Technical Consultation on Marine Information Management and Dissemination in Europe 12 / 16 Lisbon, 9 November 2009 Information Management Challenges I Experience shows: Barriers to intra- and inter- ERA-Net communication Outreach challenges at all levels (transnational to local) Engaging researchers and research (knowledge) users Key information/dissemination tools: Web-site and other online features (newsletter, mailing lists…) Database(s) On-site (and online) participatory communication

2 nd Technical Consultation on Marine Information Management and Dissemination in Europe 13 / 16 Lisbon, 9 November 2009 Information Management Challenges II Current and future drivers: Transnational knowledge sharing needs e.g. EC Clearing House on CCIAV; Int. CC Info. Programme ERA-driven coordination and information e.g. NETWATCH platform; ERA-Nets (SEAS, BioDiv,…) National/regional policy needs e.g. Adaptation strategies; decision support Integration of RTD results e.g. Project calls; evaluation and monitoring

2 nd Technical Consultation on Marine Information Management and Dissemination in Europe 14 / 16 Lisbon, 9 November 2009 CIRCLE 2 Adaptation Resources Centre Objective: communication tool with embedded database of national & regional programmes/projects on adaptation research Content: concept under development; response to current drivers! Special features: facilitate “links” with external activities (e.g. EC Clearing House, ERA-Nets, ADAM compendium, NETWATCH, ICCIP, national portals) Central tool to support all other C-2 features
15
2 nd Technical Consultation on Marine Information Management and Dissemination in Europe 15 / 16 Lisbon, 9 November 2009 Some questions: (open for reflection - including a Marine perspective) What type of communication tools can best “translate” policy needs into research questions and feedback RTD results to decision-making? What’s the role of the so called “boundary” organisations within the ERA context? Simple network(ers) between science and policy or information “translators”? How to enhance synergies across disciplines (“basic” Marine research and CC)? How to integrate the multitude of networks, projects and respective communication tools?
