Aim of the workshop To bring collective experience together to learn from one another about what we mean by community engagement and, using discussion exercises as prompts, share how to conduct community engagement effectively, and; To learn about the tools and frameworks available to support the planning, recording and evaluation of community engagement by using some of the key stages

Workshop content What makes a community safe? How do we plan for good community engagement? Who do we ‘engage’ with? What methods might we use? How do we record and evaluate? What tools are available to us?

A safe community In groups of 4, discuss the key characteristics of a safe community 5 minutes

Planning a strategic approach to engagement In groups address the following questions What kind of data or information might we already have on the area and what do we need to find out? Where would we locate our information? Flip chart. Who is ‘the community’ and who are the key stakeholders? List potential agency and community stakeholders. What barriers might some of the stakeholders face and how might we address them? Flip chart. Feedback to the large group (20 mins)

Methods In groups discuss; What methods might you use for different stakeholders? Will these methods give you the information you need? How will you collect your information and how will you record your outcomes? (10 mins)
