6 What is a poem? In the next minute, discuss with a partner what a poem is. Be able to come up with a definition of a poem. A poem is a work of literature in verse that often, but not necessarily, employs meter, rhyme, or figurative language in an attempt to communicate an aesthetic experience or statement which cannot be fully paraphrased in prose. 7 Poetic Devices Speaker - voice behind the poem, point of view
a. 1st person – the writer is a character (I) b. 2nd person – not typical, usually in song lyrics (You) c. 3rd person – narrated (he, she, it) d. 3rd person omniscient – Narrator/reader knows all of the characters’ thoughts, not a character in the poem Situation- circumstances surrounding the poem

8 Poetic Devices Diction- choice of words
Take a moment and think about the reason why the word choice is important. Why? Imagery- verbal expression of a sensory detail (visual, auditory, tactile, gustatory, or olfactory)

9 Poetic Devices Symbolism- representation in which an object or action represents something beyond itself meter: measured pattern of rhythmic accents in a line of verse - it’s the beat of the poem rhyme: correspondence of terminal sounds of words or of lines of verse
