What is Addition? Addition is one of the four basic mathematic operations. (The other three are subtraction, multiplication, and division.) Addition is the act of combining two or more numbers together to get one number.

An Example of Addition If I have 2 apples and add 3 more, how many apples will I have? Well, if we start out with two apples… …and we add three more… …we now have FIVE apples! 1 2 3 4 5

The Addition Symbol The addition symbol looks like this: + Now, let’s try adding using this symbol!

Adding with the Addition Symbol What if we have 2 apples and add 1 more? + If we have two apples… …plus (+) one more… …we get three apples!

Adding with Numbers Sadly, we won’t always be able to add apples. In math, we have to add numbers too…

How to Add Numbers When adding numbers, we can still think of it like adding apples—even if the problem doesn’t say so. So, when we hear the question: “What’s 3 + 4?” we know exactly what to do.

Adding Numbers—Example What’s 3+4? We can still think of it like an apple question: What’s 3 apples plus 4 apples? Thinking of it like an “apple question” can help as you learn to add.

Adding Numbers—Example So, what is 3 apples plus 4 apples? We can see that three apples plus four apples is equal to… SEVEN APPLES! +

Adding Numbers—Example However, the question isn’t what is 3 apples + 4 apples? The question is what is 3 + 4? So, the answer isn’t 7 apples, it’s just 7, since we’re working with numbers only— no apples included!

More Practice What is 4+1? Think of it like an “apple question!” What’s 4 apples + 1 apple? + 4 apples+ 1 apple is 5 apples… so the answer is 5!

Adding 0 0 This (^) is a zero. It equals nothing. So, if you add 0 to any number, it will equal that same number.

An Example 5+0= Well, if we start out with five… …and we add zero, which is nothing…..we still get five! 5

Adding more than 2 Numbers Adding more than two numbers is easy…you just add more numbers (and plus signs) to the problem.
