www.scischina.org Shanghai Community International School Conflict and Justice - Throughout history the stability of governments has had an impact on the welfare of children. Environmental Technology - People's actions can have a positive or negative effect on our environment. As we all have a responsibility to conserve our natural resources (eg. fossil fuels, forests, etc.) we must investigate how technology has impacted the environment and work towards a sustainable future. Leaders of the Pack- Everyone has the potential to be a leader. Forces and Motion - The Forces and Motions unit looks at using the scientific method to test different forms of force and motion. Body systems -The systems at work in our bodies are interrelated and require understanding and maintenance.

www.scischina.org Shanghai Community International School Field Trips Throughout the year Grade 5 will be going on field trips to supplement the curriculum Field trips reinforce learning that has occurred in class Field trips expand the scope of your child’s' learning beyond the daily routine of the classroom.

www.scischina.org Shanghai Community International School Social Skills We have a unique community at SCIS Our classroom today prepares us for work tomorrow: – Effective social skills are an absolute necessity, without these learning is hindered. –We will be completing individual assignments, but also learning to: >work together in pairs or small groups >use teamwork to aid understanding >Communicate to a range of audiences >lead and follow the lead of someone else

www.scischina.org Shanghai Community International School Social Skills How do we teach this? –We will explicitly teach social skills throughout the year within our own class and by team teaching with Mrs Mary- Ellen Cox (Lower School Academic Counselor). Our key grade 5 social skills areas are: >Becoming more independent/ organisation >Learning different strategies to help children cope with friendship/ life issues >Resilience >Emotions and communication-looking at how to cope with different feelings and how to express your ideas and feelings >Transition into middle school

Some of the activities will include: –‘The Day and the Life of a 6 th Grader’ –Meet your Mac –E-Portfolios –Tour of the Middle School –Lessons on conflict resolution –How does this lock work?
