What is GIS? Definition - The U.S. Geological Survey In the strictest sense, a GIS is a computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information, i.e. data identified according to their locations. Practitioners also regard the total GIS as including operating personnel and the data that go into the system.

Definition – Environmental Science Research Institute A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based tool for mapping and analyzing things that exist and events that happen on earth. GIS technology integrates common database operations such as query and statistical analysis with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits offered by maps.

ESRI Overview 1969 – Founded as the Environmental Science Research Institute, a privately held consulting firm that specialized in land use analysis projects. 1982 – Launched its first commercial GIS package called ARC/INFO. May 2004 – Released ArcGIS 9 March 26, 2008 – Released ArcGIS 9.2 SP5 ArcGIS 9.3 currently in Beta Expected release is Q3 2008
