1 Microsoft Excel Technology Lab Week of October 1, 2012

2 Objectives Students will create a database using Microsoft Excel with collected data on their class’ favorite football teams. Students will create a bar graph and a pie chart with the data using Microsoft Excel.

3 Collect Data What is your favorite college football team? – Florida Gators – Florida State Seminoles – Georgia Bulldogs – Miami Hurricanes You must pick one.

4 Lets get started… Open Microsoft Excel by clicking the green “X” icon in your dock. From View in Toolbar, click Formatting Pallete.

5 Vocabulary Spreadsheets- interactive computer application program for organization and analysis of information in tabular form Cells- a unit in an array formed by the intersection of a row and a column Rows- horizontal cells Columns- vertical cells Labels- text entry such as a heading used to identify a column or row of data Values- numerical quantity of data

6 Entering Data Click cell B1 Type “My Class’ Favorite Football Teams”. Select (highlight) cells B and C. In Formatting Palette, select Merge Cells box. In Formatting Palette, select picture under Horizontal Alignment that shows text Centered.

7 Team Labels Select cell A2, type Gators Select cell A3, type Seminoles Select cell A4, type Bulldogs Select cell A5, type Hurricanes

8 Team Values Select B2, type # of Gator fans Select B3, type # of Seminole fans Select B4, type # of Bulldog fans Select B5, type # of Hurricane fans

9 Creating Bar Graph Select team labels and their values. From Insert menu in toolbar, select Chart. Select Bar and then select first picture of bar graph. Move graph underneath cells with data by clicking in box and dragging.

10 Formatting Graph/Chart Double click the bar graph, and select Chart Options in Formatting Palette. Type My Class’ Football Favorites in box under Chart Title.

11 Creating a Pie Chart Select team labels and their values. From Insert menu in toolbar, select Chart. Select Pie and then select first picture. Move graph underneath bar graph. Title graph just as you did with bar graph.

12 Printing Select cells (by highlighting) that contain information that you want to print. Be sure to include bar graph and pie chart. From File menu, select Set Print Area. Select Print from File menu.

13 What you accomplished…. Pat yourself on the back for completing your first Excel assignment. You entered data in an Excel database. Using Microsoft Excel, you created a bar graph and a pie chart with your data.
