3 Introduction Deciding what job you want can be a challenging decision – there are so many things to consider, such as: What sort of job do you want? What type of business would you like to work in? Are you qualified to work in that business? Do you have what the business is looking for? Working outside? Working part time? Working with people?

4 Recruitment How does an employer find the right person for the job? Know the right skills and experience needed for the job Advertise in the right place Give the right information in their adverts Ask the right questions in interview

5 Person Specification What is a person specification? Describes the kind of person the employer is looking for – it could include: Skills Experience Attitude Working with a team Working on your own Initiative The person specification is a guide for the ideal applicant….

6 What kind of work do you want to do? Be self employedWork for an employer Work from home Work from an office Do charity work Be an educator Work with new technology Be involved in research and development

7 Have you got what it takes? Assess own skills Assess own characteristics Present yourself well on paper Applicants for jobs need to… Present your application form appropriately Provide an engaging covering letter

Find out about the employer Think about what to wear to impress the employer Think about the questions you will be asked and the answers you should give Think about the questions you want to ask Plan your route for your interview – don’t be late!

9 Planning for your career To enable you to develop your chosen career, you will need a career plan. This should include: SMART targets Your goals specific measurable attainable realistic timely Qualifications you will need to enhance your career prospects Planning your career is a sensible idea and will help you reach your goals.
