This is a noninvasive mechanical procedure for breaking up renal calculi so the can pass through the ureters.

Goldman Delmar's Comprehensive Medical Terminology 3 Hemodialysis hee-moh-dye-AL-ih-sis bem/o = blood dia = through -lysis = breaking down; destruction The process of removing excess fluids and toxins from the blood by continually shunting the patient's blood from the body into a dialysis machine for filtering, and then retrning the clean blood to the patient's bloodstream.

Goldman Delmar's Comprehensive Medical Terminology 4 kidney trnasplantation kidney tranz-plan-TAY-shun Kidney transplantation involves the surgical implantation of a healthy, human donor kidney into the body of a patient with irreversible renal failure. Kidney function is restored with a successful transplant and the patient is no longer dependent on dialysis.

Goldman Delmar's Comprehensive Medical Terminology 5 peritoneal dialysis pair-ih-toh-NEE-al dy-AL-ih-sis peritone/o = peritoneum -al - pertaining to dia = through -lysis = breaking down; destruction Dialysis is a mechanical filtering process used to cleanse the blood of waste products, draw off excess liquids, and regulate body chemistry when the kidneys fail to function properly. Instead of using the hemodialysis machine as a filter, the peritoneal membrane (also called the peritoneum) is used as the filter in peritoneal dialysis.
