WMO 2012 Survey 227 responses from 95 countries Use of satellites Use of satellite-based products (for weather, climate, water, environmental applications) Data access Training Challenges Information sources Revised questionnaire (predecessors since 1996) Simplified questions (28) Broader audience (PRs; expert teams of WMO and co-sponsored programmes (GCOS, WCRP); International Scientific Working Groups; VLab; GEO) Online, between May and mid-Sept 2012 ET-SUP had key role in preparation Assistance by intern in WMO SP office

WMO Summary - I There is increasing utilization of satellite data in all 95 Member countries responding to the Survey Value for weather, climate, marine, environmental applications broadly recognized In addition to well-established meteorological products (clouds, winds, …), there is clear emergence of operational user needs for several product types including: Lightning Soil Moisture Inland water bodies (rivers, lakes) Ozone Greenhouse gases Radiative fluxes Sea level Land Surface Temperature
14
Summary - II Importance of research/demonstration missions for operational purposes confirmed Improved access to data, especially non time- critical data (data policies, internet) Many country-specific issues identified related to data processing, visualization, tools, training Many basic users demand platform-independent, simplified and harmonized satellite data formats Many users feel insufficiently prepared for the new generation of operational satellites planned for 2014-2020 CGMS to take note of the Survey results and take action as appropriate
