Speechcraft: The 2 nd Best Membership Tool Eric Downey, ACB, ALB Eric@AlaskaMEP.org Kashim Toastmasters 12:05 – 1:00 Mondays at City Hall YACT Conference, Oct. 9, 2010, Wasilla
2
What is Speechcraft 6, 8, or 10 week program to: –Train non-members in public speaking –Introduce non-members to constructive criticism –Introduce non-members to Toastmasters –Promotoe Toastmasters to the general public. –Word of mouth referrals are #1 membership tool, and Speechcraft helps that.
3
Really, What is Speechcraft 5 or fewer participants get a crash course in doing the first 5 speeches in CC manual, and 3 evaluations for their CL manual. Generally, meetings are devoted entirely to Speechcraft speeches. Existing members do educational speeches, serve as advisors, and support. Registration fee generally includes 6-month TI membership and new member fee.
4
Why do Speechcraft? Membership building tool (2 nd Best Tool) Club teambuilding: –Several members involved –All members impacted –Takes 3 months of effort Focus existing members on how to get credit for projects –HPLP –Success/Leadership, Success/Communication, Speeches
5
Variations on the Theme Joint club, off-site, every other meeting Sign all participants as members right away Credit in CC for all 5 speeches (prevents feeling cheated, must sign up as TI members) Credit in CL for 3 evaluations (work CL from start) Consider max 3 participants to maintain standard meeting momentum
6
What is Commitment Level 40 hours by Coordinator 5 hours each by several other members At least 6 meetings dedicated to Speechcraft

Timeline StartSelect Coordinator, dates, core team 45 daysBuild team, promote. 15 – 30 days Registrations and fees, refine marketing, schedule roles. 1 – 15 days Schedule all roles, push team, push registrations, confirm sign-ups. OngoingRevise agendas and support the participants.
9
Schedule Session 1: participants give 1 – 2 minute introductions but no speeches Session 2 – 6 devoted to participant speeches. Some confusion over which session you’re on: –Coordinator starts session 1 on Welcome and Intro speech at Meeting #1. –Participants follow their speech number, Ice Breaker is start of session. –Educational Speakers look their topic (Organize Your Speech is when that educational speech is delivered, not the week when participants give their Organize Your Speech presentation.
10
Promoting Speechcraft TI has a manual “Let The World Know” Encourage referrals from members (the #1 membership building tool) Post on your FreeToastHost website 6 weeks in advance. Have dates, details and receipts so you can take $ as soon as possible. Charge cancellation penalties (100% is best)
11
The Paperwork Set your own price: $80 ($20 for club + $20 for new member + $40 dues) Give receipt to each participant Include IRS Letter of Nonprofit status Include Letter of Completion Give CC and CL book on 1 st meeting. Advisors meet and explain. If giving CC credit for all 5 speeches, you must sign them as TI members right away.

Other Files and Resources Master schedule with weekly agendas (Excel ) Award speech and Certificate of Completion (ppt) IRS nonprofit letter (pdf file) Flyer to promote Speechcraft (MS Word) Canned weekly emails for Advisors to send participants (Word) Speechcraft completion letter to employer (Word) Why do Speechcraft presentation (ppt) Registration confirmation and receipt (Word) TI Speechcraft packet ($ from TI)
14
Lessons Learned Team effort is required (4 people minimum) before you commit Speechcraft packet from TI is lacking many tools Disruptive to attendance habits; doggedly integrate existing members Don’t schedule over holidays and breaks – drags on too long) You need to buy the Better Speaker Series to get those 4 educational speeches.
15
Keys to Success Committed Coordinator who will do what it takes Build your team of existing members Promote event formally and informally Ask for help outside your club (speakers, advisors, participants)
