INTRODUCTION Nigerian Telecommunication Ltd (NITEL) was incorporated on January 1 st 1985. It is responsible for transmitting printed and verbal messages.

SERVICES OF NITEL The following are services rendered by NITEL. Local Telephone Services: This is a telecommunication network and service within a specific geographical region. These are calls between subscribers living within the same exchange area of NITEL, example is subscribers within Ota. Trunk Call Services: These are calls between people living in two different exchange area or two points. This type of call is made through Subscriber Trunk Dialing (STD). Examples of trunk call is a subscriber in Lagos calling another subscriber in Warri. Each city has its code that must precede the telephone number. International Telephone Services: These are calls between two countries. Each country has its exchange code. Example is a call form Lagos, Nigeria to New York city in USA. Other telecommunication services include: internet, facsimile transmission (FAX), satellite (television), GSM (Global System For Mobile Telecommunication.

NIGERIAN SAT The Nigerian satellites are called Nigerian Sat-1, Nigerian Sat-2 and Nigerian Sat-X. The first Sat that was launched in the orbit was Nigerian Sat-1 by Russians on September 27 th, 2003. Nigerian Sat-2 and Nigerian Sat-X was launched in August 18 th, 2011. The main reason for these SATs is to monitor disasters and other issues within Nigeria. Such issues include pollution, floods etc.

REASONS FOR NIGERIAN SAT-1, NIGERIAN SAT-2, AND NIGERIAN SAT-X To give warning in advance for natural disaster such as earthquakes, volcano, floods, storms etc. To manage or avoid disaster caused by man such as erosion, oil pollution, deforestation, forest fire etc. They can be used for water resource development and management. That is, to access the quality and quantity of surface or underground water. They can also be used to predict rainfall. They are used to determine and differentiate host mineral areas that have deposit of oil, gas and solid minerals. They can be used in agriculture for mapping and land use planning. For mapping of states and boundaries between countries. They can also give early warning of outbreak of diseases.

COURIER SERVICES These are services rendered by corporate organizations. They are responsible for collecting, transporting and delivering parcels, mails or important documents to any part of the world. They ensure these mails are urgently, securely and safely delivered. This they do either by land or air. Examples of courier organizations are IAS, DHL, etc.

FUNCTIONS OF COURIER SERVICES Important documents are safely and urgently delivered, most times in 24 hours. This is a major advantage over post office. Courier services enhance business transactions. They can transport cargo through air or sea. Their services reduce pilfering, damage or misplace- ment of items. They are more efficient and reliable than post office. The relate more personally and cordially than post office.

ASSIGNMENT In a tabular form, differentiate between Telex machine and FAX. PROJECT: Make photocopies, snap shots or download from the net samples of TELEX MACHINE AND FAX MACHINE.
