Discovery Program Philosophy The Renton School District believes that students who have been identified as highly-capable should have the opportunity to develop their strengths and talents through a rigorous academic program which enriches and extends the adopted curricula; honors students’ unique gifts, interests, and learning styles; and promotes higher-order, creative, and critical thinking.

Program Goals Provide: An opportunity for highly-capable learners to interact with peers of like abilities in order to promote a healthy self-concept relative to their giftedness An environment which encourages divergent thinking, creative problem-solving, and higher- level thinking Leadership and participatory opportunities which will enhance the community and society Opportunities for self-directed learning

Readiness : Grade 3 Reading Able to think critically and express ideas using verbal and written communication Stamina and focus in independent reading for up to 20 minutes Able to recall key events or details in a text through verbal communication

Readiness : Grade 3 Writing Write multiple, complete sentences; understand sentence and paragraph structure Comfortable generating ideas for writing Able to write and focus for up to 15 minutes at a time

Readiness : Grade 3 Math Fluency in addition and subtraction facts Exposure to multiplication and division facts (1’s, 2’s, 5’s) Able to show math work and explain thinking through words, numbers, and pictures

Readiness: Grade 4 Reading Able to think critically and express ideas using verbal and written communication Stamina and focus in independent reading for up to 30 minutes Able to express a basic summary of key events or details in a text through verbal communication

Readiness : Grade 4 Writing Write multiple, complete paragraphs using complete sentences; understand essay structure Comfortable generating ideas to write about within a larger topic Able to write and focus for up to 20 minutes at a time

Readiness : Grade 4 Math Fluency in multiplication facts up to 12x12 Able to show math work and explain thinking through words, numbers, and pictures Comfortable with adding and subtracting using the standard algorithm Understands the concept of fractions

Readiness: Grade 5 Reading Meaning monitoring strategy(ies) Able to infer and think critically, as well as express ideas using verbal and written communication using a variety of texts Stamina and focus in independent reading for up to 40 minutes Summarize fiction text verbally and in writing

Readiness: Grade 5 Writing Write several, complete and coherent paragraphs; understand differences in narrative and informational structures Able to write and focus for up to 30 minutes at a time Apply organizers/strategies to generate ideas for writing across forms Understand and apply steps of writing process

Readiness: Grade 5 Math Fluent with multiplication and division facts through 12’s Understand the concepts of fractions and decimals and how they are related Able to consistently show/explain thinking using words, numbers, and/or pictures Comfortable taking risks with new challenges/perseverance
