AGM 2013 Debrief of Thursday Brainstorming sessions
2
AGM 2013 Growth Breakout Session Moderator – Cory Sertl Questions: 1.How can US Sailing help keep young people engaged? 2.How can we introduce more people to sailing? 3.How can we develop lifelong sailors?
3
AGM 2013 Key Takeaways: Promote sailing as a lifestyle, not just a sport Identify and promote the “rock stars” of the sport (and do it multi-generationally). Ask youth what they want directly- Go to them directly and also get them to meetings (like AGM). Encourage at YCs too. Develop different membership options for different constituents (Entry level, community sailing) – MVP program- Age based new member bonus
4
AGM 2013 Key Takeaways: US Sailing should serve as a resource center which gives programs the blueprint/template to be successful. – “Pop-up” Sailing Center – Team Racing in box (Clinic, template & How to) – Variety of regional seminars/clinics – Examples of successful program with similar challenges Organizations need US Sailing produced materials (videos, advertisements, promo pieces) which can be used to recruit new sailors and engage current ones. Regional focus for National issues: Help promote local events and “outreach days” and provide info about National-level US Sailing events.
5
AGM 2013 Points For Consideration: Focus on how to connect the public to “private” Yacht Clubs Identify opportunities for high school and college aged non- racing sailors. Better collaboration with Industry needed. US Sailing should not only identify the trends in the sport, but be the leader in many of them (and share that information).
6
AGM 2013 Points For Consideration: Promote sailing as a career (to individuals and clubs) Work with the class associations to find strong, regionally common, boats and work to get more people into them. More offerings for casual/recreational sailors. Provide opportunities for kids to get on different boats- both high performance and non-dinghy.
7
AGM 2013 Safety Breakout Session Moderator – Chuck Hawley Question: How can US Sailing improve the safety of our sport through expanded education, research and programs?
8
AGM 2013 Key Takeaways: Develop and promote structured online safety training resources for sailors – Publish US Sailing approved content provided by US Sailing Safety at Sea experts – Collect content that is targeted and categorized for specific roles of the participants. Utilize various mediums within the knowledge base, including video demonstrations – Provide Safety at Sea webinars Develop packaged, standardized Safety at Sea presentations, as tool kits or a “presentation in a box”, and distribute to schools and clubs for their sailors. Create standardized presenter training certification standards. Provide more access to remote Safety at Sea seminar certification opportunities
9
AGM 2013 Points For Consideration: Position safety as a consistent theme across all of US Sailing’s programs and communications. On-water training needs to be more accessible and available. Foster and grow relationships with national safe boating groups, including the U.S. Coast Guard. Topics for Modules: Race 101, Judges training, on-land safety, non-sailor education, crew overboard, medical, damage control, fire prevention and techniques, weather safety, safety equipment, engine failure, application of rules using real-life examples, propeller guard safety, harbor safety, drowning prevention
10
AGM 2013 Points For Consideration (continued): Focus on basic messaging, like “Wear your lifejacket”. Tag-team presenters: Combine Safety at Sea presenter with local sailor appointed by host club or organization who understands area safety risks. Safety education for parents Boat trailer safety and on-land safety
11
AGM 2013 Engaging the local organizations Breakout Session Moderator – Dave Rosekrans Question: How can US Sailing improve it support of these organizations to ensure their health and sustainability?
12
AGM 2013 Key Takeaways: Cruising Focus Repackage existing programs to develop a sampler of programming to engage club members Boat show participation Lower price membership for community sailing, disabled sailors Develop templates for Community Sailing Orgs to use for communications Take applications for US Sailing to come and run a disabled sailing clinic- leave behind a roadmap for the on-going program
13
AGM 2013 Points For Consideration: Website additions – To benefit clubs, list their facilities, sister clubs and US Sailing regions Promote US Sailing to clubs – Provide one page sheet on programs & benefits Create social connections – Engage social members and build them into the greater sailing community How to Kits for Community Sailing – Templates on how to develop a PR program, a fundraising campaign, an event, ect.
14
AGM 2013 Points For Consideration: Disabled/Adaptive Program Development – Consult with Clubs/Organizations on how to run one – Connect with National organizations (i.e. Wounded Warrior) to promote sailing as a option – Help organizations make boats adaptive – Sanction Disabled Sailing programs and add a certification addendum to US Sailing instructor training programs Staff visits to Programs to work with Club/Org staff
