US DOE funded project: BioChemCat Dr. Birgitte Ahring, Director & Principal Investigator Presented by: Dr. Keith Thomsen, Asst. Director A partnership between the Port of Benton, WSU, CleanVantage, LLC and PNNL

Port of Benton: Project holder, Delivery of biomasses, Outreach WSU: Pilot plant operations & outreach CleanVantage, LLC: Research Lead, IP Holder, Pretreatment, Fermentation, High-temperature Lignin Conversion PNNL: Sub-contractor, Upgrading into fuel and chemicals

Catalytic Upgrading to drop-in Fuels Solid Fuel Salt Removal Biomass Feedstocks (Corn stover, wood, wastes, energy crops, etc) Pretreatment Separation C2-C5 Molecules Hydrolysis & Fermentation Biogas Production High Value Products Production of Specialty and Industrial Chemicals

Pretreatment Reactor 10 Liter Pretreatment Reactor 100 Liter Pretreatment Reactor (NEW) 400 Liter Fermentation Vessels (NEW) Screw Press Liquid/Solid Separation (NEW) High Speed Centrifuge Liquid/Solid Separation (NEW)

Raw Softwood Milling Pretreatment

Integrated biorefinery process concept maximizes the utilization of the biomass resource (i.e., converting the biomass available into a number of high energy products). We call it the: THE CARBON SLAUGHTERHOUSE ”THE CARBON SLAUGHTERHOUSE ” Corn StoverGrape Pommace Hop Wastes Paper and Food Waste Yard Wastes Wheat Straw The Integrated Biorefinery concept can use many different types of biomass materials

SpokesHub Biomass Feedstocks Forest Residues Crop Residues Manures Food Process Waste Municipal Solid Waste Grasses PRETREATMENT & BIO-PROCESSING PLATFORM MOLECULES Catalytic Upgrading to Fuels Production of Specialty and Industrial Chemicals High Value Products Decentralization of Processing Spokes Allows Deployment Regionwide Near Biomass Sources Centralization of Upgrading (Hub) Allows Fuel Upgrading Near High Demand Centers
