3 Monotheism-the belief in one god. All of these are monotheistic. Christianity ***Founder – Jesus ***Deity – God (Trinity of God the Father, Jesus the Son, and Holy Spirit) ***Holy book – Bible Basic beliefs – Jesus is the son of God and the savior of mankind. Symbol - cross Islam ***Founder – Muhammad ***Deity – Allah ***Holy book – Koran Basic beliefs: Allah is supreme and ultimate creator and Muhammad is his prophet Holiest city – Mecca Followers are called – Muslims Symbol – crescent and star Judaism **Founder – Abraham **Deity – God **Holy Book – Hebrew Bible Basic Beliefs – God is the creator and ruler of the universe Holiest city – Jerusalem Holiest site – Western Wall Symbol – six pointed star of David

4 Hinduism ***Polytheism – the belief in more than one god. Hinduism is polytheistic. ***Founder – no known founder ***Deities: Thousands of gods. ***Holy book – Vedas Basic Beliefs – Hindus believe in reincarnation (the cycle of death and rebirth) To attain a higher form of life, they must live well in this life (dharma) How they worship – Hindus also build shrines in their homes to worship gods of their choice. Buddhism ***Founder – Siddharta Guatma ***Deity – none; however the goal is to reach nirvana. ***Basic Beliefs – Reincarnation (cycle of death and rebirth) and the 4 Noble Truths 1.The truth of suffering 2.The truth of the cause of suffering. 3.The truth of the end of suffering. 4.The truth of the path that leads to the end of suffering. The Path The Eightfold path leads to nirvana.
