The pouring out of the Holy Spirit Old Testament

Review The Holy Spirit worked in –Creation –Revelation –Confirmation The Holy Spirit continues working in –Regeneration –Sanctification

The pouring out of the Spirit The time at which the Spirit would begin His works tied to salvation is called “the pouring out of the Spirit” We will look at promises God made about the pouring out of the Spirit in order to know –when the pouring out would occur –who it would benefit –what difference it would make

Promises in Isaiah Isaiah 32:9-20 –Prophesying against the nation of Judah. –Judah is now extremely corrupt and evil. –God is planning to punish the nation unless it repents of its sins. –Verses 9-14 are part of a longer passage (most of Chapters 31 and 32) which tells of the punishments God will bring down upon them if they do not repent.

Promises in Isaiah Isaiah 32:9-20 –In verses 15-20 God also reminds them that He will again bless them after they repent. –God will not always punish the nation. –The blessing them after their repentance is called the pouring out of the Spirit

Promises in Isaiah Isaiah 44:1-5 –Isaiah 44 is in the middle of a long series of passages (Isaiah 42 - 53) prophesying about the coming Savior. –The prophet is talking about the blessings that God will bestow upon His people in the days of His Savior. Parallel statements assure the point is made clearly

Promises in Isaiah Isaiah 44:1-5 –“I will pour out water on the thirsty land” (v3) –“I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring” (v3) –“And My blessing on your descendants” (v3) Pouring out the Spirit is the same as pouring out God’s blessings –And this pouring out is tied to the coming of the Savior

Promises in Ezekiel Ezekiel 39:25-29 –Ezekiel wrote after the people had been taken into slavery as Isaiah had prophesied. –Ezekiel is referring to the time when Israel will repent and turn back to God. –Then God will bless them. –“I will have poured out My Spirit upon them”

Promises in Joel Joel 2:26-32 –Referring to the time when (after punishment and repentance) God will bless the nation. –The blessings to the nation are concluded in verse 27. –Beginning with verse 28, God explains how His blessings upon the nation of Israel will result in blessings upon all people. The timing is placed “after this”, that is, after the promised blessings to Israel if they repented

Promises in Joel Joel 2:28-32 –God will pour out His Spirit on all mankind –As a sign, people will again prophesy, have prophetic dreams and have visions from God No indication how long the sign would last –From that time forward “whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” Pouring out of the Spirit = a blessing for all mankind (cf. Gen 12:1-3) –The blessing is the ability to be saved

Promises in Zechariah Zechariah 12:10 –Pouring out of the Spirit Showing grace (God’s blessings) And supplication (a time when man can approach God through prayer) –Comes when they can look upon God, whom they had pierced Comes with a conviction of sin

When the Spirit is poured out It means –God’s blessings have come if we repent –the Savior has died to bring us salvation –we can call upon the Lord to be saved –we can then approach God in prayer In our next lesson we will look for New Testament promises of the pouring out of the Spirit and the fulfillment of all these promises
