Waiting for God’s Promise
2
Acts 1:1-4 1In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command, “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.
3
Waiting can be good and waiting can be challenging
4
The waiting in this case was good though uncertain.
5
Jesus was crucified in a horrific way
Jesus was crucified in a horrific way. But the horror and shocked was replaced with hope and joy in Jesus’ resurrection.
6
While appearing to them over a 40 day period, Jesus gave this command in verses 4-5.
On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
7
What gift?
8
What does the Holy Spirit look like?
9
What will the Holy Spirit do?
10
How will we know when the Holy Spirit comes?
11
How long do we wait?
12
Matthew 28: Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

The Process Conveyed Obeyed Stayed Prayed

Conveyed On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for my gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. Acts 1:4
15
Obeyed Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. Acts 1:12
16
Stayed When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. Acts 1:13
17
Prayed They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. Acts 1:14
18
Result of waiting and receiving the Holy Spirit? (Acts 2:1-4)
1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
19
Acts 2: They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
