Lithuania on the way of peace promotion Membership of UNESCO (tool for global promotion of peace and security through nations cooperation in the areas of education, science and communication) – since 7 October, 1991 Membership of UNESCO’s Associated schools Project Network (ASPnet)- since 1995: 23 high schools

Role of ASPnet To promote the ideals of UNESCO by conducting pilot projects with the aim of better preparing children and young people to meet effectively the challenges of an increasing complex and interdependent world.

Areas of action in the ASPnet Strategy (1) Learning to know (holistic learning and meaningful knowledge suitable to adjust them to vital and changing world and to be able to make decisions) Learning to do (involving of students in collecting information, analyzing and drawing conclusions using problem-solving techniques, non-violent resoluiton of conflicts, creativity and communication skills)

Areas of action in the ASPnet Strategy (2) Learning to be (reinforcement of humanistic and ethical dimensions of education and promotion of students’ critical thinking, attitudes and commitment to peace) Learning to live together (reinforcement of the goal of learning to be together through confirming a sense of identity, self-worth and self-confidence combined with respect for other cultures)

Activities of ASPnet schools (1) 3-4 activities annually: Human rights (the Day of Human Rights – 10 December) Multicultural Dialogue (Week of Languages, project Mondialogo) Global issues (The Earth day) Citizenship (Week/day of Citizenship)

Activities of ASPnet schools (2) Joint activities: Joint theatre plays (“You have a right”: under the Convention of Children rights) Participation in the project Mondialogo

Why we need participation in the ASPnet activity? Participation in the ASPnet is challenging: activities must involve children into implementation of them, not only to be formal performance Schools’ community benefit from the activities within ASPnet: development of the community

Situation in higher education of Lithuania (1) High level of internationalization: Erasmus programme, Interatlantic programmes, Other exchange programmes, export of higher education studies into less developed countries Benefit for participants of exchange programme: development of competences Global benefit: promotion of peace through education and multicultural dialogue

Situation in higher education of Lithuania (2) Promotion of citizenship: Celebration and commemoration of state and national holidays and events, involvement as big as possible community of academic society

Problems Not sufficient level of understanding of global issues: reserveness (national feature), indifference, lack of multicultural understanding Problems typical to most European countries Lithuania is open to taking good experience from other countries. Education sector follows as well this direction
