36 Color Symbolism White: Suggests unblemished purity – an immaculate canvas, goodness, and cleanliness. It also represents a void, or a lack of anything. Yellow: Warmth, happiness, spring, youth. Also suggests danger (e.g., yellow road signs). People get irritated when yellow fills their field of view. Use it sparingly. Excellent as an accent but never as a background. Green: Suggests nature, freshness, new life, and healing. Also has negative associations with wealth, greed, and envy.

37 Red: The color of passion, fire, heat, anger, and strength. Use it to make a bold statement. Purple: Suggests royalty and sometimes wisdom. Middle shades of purple may be considered artsy and flamboyant. Usually considered to be a “woman’s color”. Pink: Regarded as a little girl’s color. Suggests parental love, sweetness, innocence, and a heart freely given. Blue: Light blue suggests airiness and fantasy. Medium shades of blue (called “professional blues”) suggest traditional conservative values, honesty, and steadfastness. Dark blues are considered professional and serious.

38 Black: Although it is the symbol of death and mourning, it is also regarded as the most minimal, sophisticated color – stylish and elegant. Use black when you want to increase the perceived value of a product. Gray: One of the most attractive colors to creative people. It has a subtle elegance. However, working class people associate gray with industrial uniforms and react negatively. Be aware that people who live in wet, rainy areas perceive the color as dreary. However, along with white and black, gray will always “go” with any color scheme and will never clash.

39 Suggestions for Using Color Does your design look like an exploded rainbow? Too much color can be detrimental. Your website should have an identifiable color scheme to maintain unity. Does your design use complementary highlights to the main color scheme for special items? Are your color choices appropriate for your intended audience? Would a bright, vibrant color scheme convey your message more effectively than a pastel one? Or would the message work better in muted tones?
