The Scientific Method The investigative process in which scientists ask questions, formulate ideas, and seek answers to our physical environment. 1.Make an observation 2.Ask a question/state the problem 3.Research 4.Form a hypothesis (educated guess) 5.Experiment (test the hypothesis) 6.Collect and analyze data 7.Draw a conclusion 8.Make a prediction

3. Hypothesis An educated guess that attempts to answer the question or stated problem –Must be based on fact or recent knowledge –When choosing the best hypothesis, pick the one that is simplest –Ex: Good- Fish will be affected by temperature change Bad- Fish will swim upside down in water decreased by 10 degrees **Too specific!!

4. Experimentation At least two groups must be present: 1.Control Group- Group in an experiment in which no variable (change) is introduced Stays normal to serve as basis for comparison Can not have the variable in this group!

Experimentation 2.Experimental (Variable) Group- Group in an experiment in which one variable (change) is introduced to determine its effect Only test one variable per experimental group Can have more than one experimental group Types of variables: Independent Variable- Factor/aspect changed in an experiment which is pre-determined by the experimentor Ex: Vitamins given to a child Dependent Variable- Factor/aspect changed in an experiment as a result of the independent variable Ex: Growth of child as a result of vitamins

6. Try this! Bob plays in a band on Saturday nights. Lately, not many spectators have been coming to see his band play. After talking to the other band members, they felt their shows were getting boring. They decided that changing the bands stage presence may draw a better crowd. The first weekend, the show was exactly the same as usual and five people showed up. The second weekend, they set up a light show and twelve people showed up. The third weekend, they all dyed their hair crazy colors, but only six people showed up. From that point on, Bobs band had a light show at every gig. Identify each step of the scientific method, including the dependent and independent variables.
