Introduction to the 4 th Quarter Debate U.S. History 2015

Format 3-4 group members There will be a “for” group and an “against” group for the same issue. Class will determine (via a vote) on what issues to debate on.

Format Opening Statement (2-3 minutes). Presentation (5-8 minutes) Debate Closing Statements (2-3 minutes)

Format Debate – Each side will prepare 3 questions to ask. – Opposing side has 2 minutes to answer. – Rebuttal from asking group (1 minute)

Debate is Like the Argumentative Essay The thesis(claim) will be the main focus. Your group needs to support your thesis with reasons. Your group will need to address the opposing viewpoint.

Debate is Like the Argumentative Essay There needs to be organization throughout the debate. The group should display a strong understanding of the topic. The group should be aware of the style of presentation.

But MOST IMPORTANTLY... The debate should be based on facts – RESEARCH SHOULD BE EVIDENT. The debate should be COMPLETE AND REHEARSHED.
