Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

ATP As you may have read on the work sheet ATP is sort of like the currency for the cell. Your cells have to invest a certain amount of ATP in order to get out more ATP ATP is the source of energy for all reactions in the cell ATP- stands for adenosine tri-phosphate

ATP→ADP→ATP When an ATP molecule is used one of the phosphates comes off and transfers energy to the cell process. Once that phosphate is removed the ATP is converted into a lower-energy molecule called ADP (adenosine di-phosphate) ADP can be converted back to ATP if energy is inputted and a phosphate is added

Where does ATP come from Your body produces ATP from the different foods you eat. Your food does not contain ATP your body has to digest your food first. Digestion breaks down food into smaller molecules that can be used to make ATP

ATP Different food produces different amounts of ATP or energy Carbohydrates lipids and proteins all produce a different amount of ATP

Carbohydrates Carbs are not stored in large amounts in your body. Generally they are broken down most often by your body The main carbohydrate that is broken down is glucose. This molecule will yield about 36 ATP molecules

Carbs vs. Lipids Even though carbs are most commonly broken down they do not provide the largest amount of ATP Lipids store the most energy about 80% of the energy in your body

Lipids An example of a lipid is Triglyceride One triglyceride molecule can be broken down to make 146 ATP molecules

Proteins Proteins could have the potential to provide about as much energy as Carbohydrates do However the amino acids that come from proteins that cells could use to produce ATP are needed to build new proteins.

Classwork/Homework I will pass out a packet that is to be completed today If you finish early grab a book and begin working on the following vocabulary ATP, ADP, Chemosynthesis, Cellular Respiration, Aerobic, glycolysis, anaerobic, Krebs cycle, fermentation, lactic acid If you do not have time to finish this today it will be due first thing in class tomorrow Since you cannot take books home you will be responsible for getting the information online if you do not finish in class Tomorrow there will be a 5 question quiz on Energy and ATP
