COGKNOW Project coordinator –Teléfonica, Spain Technical coordinator –University of Ulster, Northern Ireland Scientific coordinator –Luleå University of Technology

Aim To develop and evaluate a user-validated remotely configurable cognitive prosthetic device with associated services for people with mild dementia To help people to experience greater autonomy and feelings of empowerment, and to enjoy an enhanced quality of life

Focus in COGKNOW Developing a prosthetic device to help people to remember maintain social contacts perform daily activities enhance feelings of safety

Work Plan Structure

Wp1 Human Factors Analysis This work package intends to ascertain the functionality, performance, and obtain more insight in needs, wants and demands and conduct Human Factor Analysis in four faces of those involved from the user perspective (people with mild dementia and their carers, informal or professional). Users as designers

Wp1 Human Factors Analysis Design of material and workshops T.1.2 Dementia Coping Questionnaire I am going to read you a number of statements. I would like to know if you recognize these statements. It works like this: I read each statement out loud and I give you the possible answer categories. You then indicate which answer you agree with. You can choose from the following four alternatives: 1. agree totally 2. agree somewhat 3.disagree somewhat 4.disagree totally Instruction for interviewer Circle the code for the alternative mentioned agree totally agree somewhat disagree somewhat disagree totally 1.Since my memory problems were finally diagnosed, I have felt relieved 2.I do memory exercises (riddles and crossword puzzles) 3.I have a daily routine I stick to 4. I try to accomplish as much as I can on the days I feel well 5.I am getting older, so forgetfulness is normal 6.I generally try to think as little as possible about my problems 7.I avoid new situations and unfamiliar places 8.I withdraw from conversations; I am afraid I will forget what people have said 9.I am not ashamed of my illness and talk about it openly 10.I rely on others to remind me of appointments and obligations 11.I get scared when I think about my future 12.I try to laugh about my forgetfulness 13.I make lots of notes so I won’t forget anything 14.My forgetfulness often annoys me 15.I am afraid of losing myself because of my memory problems4

Wp1 Human Factors Analysis Design of material and workshops T.1.2 Ex Morning: wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast, coffee, go out

Wp1 Human Factors Analysis Workshops and (group) interviews with (in)formal carers Aim: to inventory needs and wants of the users, and discuss possible qualitative solutions.

Wp1 Human Factors Analysis Individual interviews with persons with dementia with standardized questionnaires Aim: to inventory the specific cognitive disabilities, other personal and context characteristics, support network, coping, needs, received care and support, experienced autonomy and aspects of quality of life.

Wp1 Human Factors Analysis Individual interviews with carers with standardized questionnaires Aim: to inventory general personal and context characteristics of patient and carer, coping, inventory of carers opinion of patients daily functioning, support network, needs, quality of life, and use of services.

Wp1 Human Factors Analysis The workshops and interviews resulted in an extensive overview of needs and a list of preferred ICT-solutions/functionalities that could help persons with dementia in their daily life, could enhance their feelings of autonomy and improve their quality of life.

Functionalities field test 1 COGKNOW area support for memory day and time indication reminders for taking meals reminder for brushing teeth mobile device location request

Functionalities field test 1 COGKNOW area support for social contacts picture dialling function on stationary device and mobile device

Functionalities field test 1 COGKNOW area support with daily activities Play music on stationary device Turn radio on and off

Functionalities field test 1 COGKNOW area enhance feelings of safety Safety warning door left open Easy emergency contact

WP2 – Technical Development, Services and Applications Objectives –Translating findings from user analyses into technical specifications. –Development of a suite of multi-modal interfaces to deliver reminders. –Development of a remotely configurable mobile solution. –Development of a home- based visual interface

Current Status Development of the core operating management system of the mobile device. Use of existing hardware solutions for the mobile device (smart phone). Technology: J2ME + Windows Mobile libraries Function establishment of the communications modules for GSM, GPRS and GPS based communications with the central facility in addition to short range mobile communications (WiFi) Data requirements for the user’s schedule stored on the phone Support of remote configuration

WP4: Field testing/Implementation & Testing -Conduct tree field tests – built of each other – increase on the complex ability. -Responsible for teaching users and carers in how to use the technique. -Three Testsites: NLL, Luleå Sweden VUMC, Amsterdam, Holland Belfast City Hospital, Belfast, North Ireland

AIM for Field test # 1 Test/evaluation: Usability Usefulness
