What is a Forest School? Forest School offers children regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands on learning experiences in a local woodland environment
2
History of Forest School 1950s - Began in Denmark when a retired soldier started to teach children about the natural environment through songs, stories and practical hands on experiences 1990s - Adopted by students at Bridgewater College (UK) 2000s - Bridgewater College began to run FS leader courses which is later credited by the OCN 2010 – currently over 200 qualified leaders in Wales

Essential elements 1. Use of a local woodland or wooded setting 2. A qualified leader 3. Regular visits
4
Forest School programme Forest School leaders will lead sessions alongside teachers and support staff Risk assessments compiled before each session The group (typically 15) visit the FS site ideally once a week throughout the year Games - hide and seek, making shelters and woodland art activities Free playtime Tool use, fire lighting and cooking are gradually introduced alongside strict safety procedures Final FS session is usually marked with a celebratory event which parents are invited to
5
Opportunity to take risks The learners safety and welfare is a priority Pupils are routinely taught to recognise risks, why rules are necessary and how to be safe in the outdoor environment High adult to child ratios ensure children can take risks that would not normally be possible Smaller group sizes mean children have the time and support to master more complicated tasks Less fear of failing as there is always time to have another go Sessions are held in all weathers which can lead to a greater physical and mental resilience to being outdoors in any weather
