1 EUDET Kick-off Meeting Summary and Outlook Where are we now and where do we go from here? Joachim Mnich DESY 17.02.2006
2
2 Formal Status of the Project EUDET officially started 1.1.2006 Final contract available 1) to be signed by DESY and EC defines entry into force important for some partner to hire personnel & spend money 2) accession forms to be signed by all partners underway After that all formalities done! Expect first instalment soon Now we must fully concenrate on scientific part of the project Complete management structure in place
3
3 Structure of EUDET: Scientific Status of the Project Detector R&D Network: Information exchange and intensified collaboration Common simulation and analysis framework Validation of simulation Deep submicron radiation-tolerant electronics Test Beam Infrastrucuture Large bore magnet Pixel beam telescope Tracking Detectors Large TPC prototype Silicon TPC readout Silicon tracking Calorimeter ECAL HCAL Very Forward Calorimeter FE Electronics and Data Acquistion System Activities split up into several tasks:
4
4 Status of Tasks Web based information system: well advanced framework for eudet.org existing please start using it JRAs should take care of their part assign responsible person(s) development of framework not finished: papers, meetings, outreach, … new demands will pop up On next slides: Typical examples, no claim of completeness Emphasis on items to be achieved soon
5
5 Testbeam Infrastructure Magnet (PCMAG) Magnet existing at KEK Magnet to be used by several other devices (TPC, Si detectors, calorimeter?) Point were close inter-JRA collaboration and communication is needed Infrastructure Areas of work identified Transport to DESY August 2006
6
6 Testbeam Infrastructure Pixel Telescope Simulation σ ≈ 2µm 2007: Demonstrator based on existing CMOS chip limited speed but useful beam telescope DAQ important issue beyond beam telescope → DAQ workshop at this workshop
7
7 Detailed working plan establised Testbeam Infrastructure
8
8 Tracking TPC fieldcage design based on light small prototype TPC prototype electronics - FADC based on ALTRO - TDC type readout important: well defined interfaces to readout planes - mechanics - electronics Design of readout planes will be complex Need input now from all potential users 60 cm length 80 cm diam. TDC scheme
9
9 Si-TPC Going from MediPix to TimePix clock distribution scheme under discussion - local oscillator per pixel - distributed clock final pixel schematics in ≈ 1 month chip submission in summer 1 st TimePix operational 1/2007
10
10 Silicon Tracking FE electronics Mechanics Cooling Alignment Incorporated into SILC Example: FE chips in 130 nm Submission in April Potential application of NA2 access to rad. hard micro-electronics
11
11 Study, design and construction of an half module of an half module 160cm 160cm 36 cm Study, design and construction of an half module of an half module 160cm 160cm 36 cm Calorimeter ECAL The EUDET Module: - 2006 R&D and design e.g. radiator material HCAL design: Input from testbeam
12
12 Very Forward Calorimeter Laser-based positioning system Test system linearity/homogeneity First ideas: Positioning system Readout: high linearity at large dynamic range
13
13 Electronics for Calorimeter DHCAL TECH1 layout FE chip (1mm) Wafer (500µm) PCB (600µm) Common readout architecture Several key innovative features (power pulsing, digitsation,…) Key issue for ILC calorimeter concept ECAL: Reduce thickness to minimum
14
14 Data Acquisition DAQ has been identified as key issue of EUDET part of the infrastructures easy-to-use for users cross-JRA issue combined testbeam run of several sub-detectors relations to software framework (→ NA2) DAQ is an important issuse for ILC detectors EUDET is not going to design/build anything close to the final ILC DAQ system but we must stay connected to the international R&D efforts to go into the same direction
15
15 Transnational Access TA1 2006 → 2009DESY Testbeam TA2 2008 → 2009Access to infrastructure Eligible user: - European user groups, i.e. the speaker of the group must be affiliated to a European institute - but not from the same country, e.g. non-German for TA1 - EUDET or extra-EUDET Eligible projects: - ILC related or any other HEP or non-HEP project Procedure: - write a short proposal for typically 2-3 weeks testbeam usage - to be evaluated by our Selection Board Your potential profit: - travel money More details soon on eudet.org
16
16 The Near Future 2006 2007 2008 2009 EUDET time profile: 2006 is already a very important year! Reminder: What do we have to achieve until the end of the year? 2006 milestones and deliverables
17
17 Milestones 2006 JRA1: Testbeam Infrastructure September:Prototype 1 of small digital chip December:Magnet available NA2: Detector R&D Network October:1 st stage computing network October:Annual Scientific Workhop December:1 st version of electronic information system NA1: management: February: Kick-off Meetingdone October:Annual Meeting (IB, SC)
18
18 JRA3: Calorimeters September:HCAL VME test stand October:Concept review of all tasks December:ECAL mechanics concept December:TECH1 December:ASIC prototype DHCAL Milestones 2006 JRA2: Tracking Detectors December:TPC preamp prototype board December:TimePix operational
19
19 Deliverables 2006
20
20 Next Steps Lot of work to be accomplished already in 2006 Consolidate plans Advertise positions quickly and start to hire personnel Start to spend money (where reasonable) Remember: we should try to stick to our spending profile Continue bi-weekly meetings of SC Plan for full review of status in summer - scientific and financial aspects - coordinators, tasks leaders Annual Workshop Meeting in October - similar layout and duration as Kick-off Meeting - preparation of Annual Report - date and venue being discussed
21
21 EUDET in the ILC Universe Relation to developments in Americas and Asia talks by Andy White and Tohru Takeshita with very positive reactions towards EUDET
22
22 Fully incorporated in the ILC detector R&D - Make optimal use of EUDET resources on international scale - Avoid unnecessary duplication structures Special attention: - EUDET is a contract between you and the EC with well defined milestones and deliverables some only months away - Need for some independent structures managements, meetings,.. - Find delicate equilibrium between these exigencies EUDET in the ILC Universe
23
23 EUDET in the ILC Universe My personal view on EUDET and the relation to other ILC activities (in the language of particle physicists) consider EUDET as sort of (large) virtual institute which is part of an even larger collaboration the ILC detector R&D EUDET provides resources to and takes responsibilities in the collaboration which must be carefully synchronised with the other collaborators e.g. with collaborations as CALICE, FCAL, SILC, LCTPC yet, even as virtual institute EUDET is responsible towards its funding agency (European Union) requires an adequate internal structure and management This meeting was an important and successful step towards our goals
24
24 Acknowledgements Many thanks to all of you for coming to DESY and participating in this Kick-off Meeting (approximately 100 participants) Many thanks to our Advisory Board for following the meeting As well as to Stefano Fontana (EU) for his visit and his talk For the organisation of the workshop many thanks to Ramona Matthes & Adrian Vogel See you all at our Annual Workshop end of this year!
