Web 2.0 and Beyond A look at what Web 2.0 is and what it's good for. By: Derek Hildreth
2
What to Expect Introduction Tools Physical Tools Desktop Tools Web Tools Defining Web 2.0 Web 1.0 vs Web 2.0 Web 2.0 vs Web 2.5 Conclusions
3
Introduction Everybody has some sort of familiarity with the Internet and the Web. Simply The Internet is a network of interconnected computer networks. The Web is a computer network consisting of a collection of internet sites that offer text and graphics and sound and animation resources.
4
The Tools What would the Web be if it weren't for the tools we have available? Common Tools E-Mail File Storage Personal Homepages Immediate Information (Dictionaries and Encyclopedias) Instant Messaging Online shopping etc.
5
Old to New Tools In time, every tool goes through an upgrade of some sorts... And that's essentially what we're talking about here.
6
Desktop Tools The same goes for desktop applications or software. These upgrades are distinguished with a version number. Gnome 1.0Gnome 2.22
7
Web Tools Like desktop tools, web tools go through the same process of upgrading. Except the Web as a whole is way too complicated to keep track of the upgrades and version numbers. So, we give it a conceptual, general name...

Introducing Web 2.0! Web 2.0 was coined by Dale Dougherty and popularized by O'Reilly Media back in 2004. It has grown to become one of the biggest ”Buzzwords” around. A buzzword is basically just a fasion word that creates excitment or significance. It's difficult to define exactly what Web 2.0 is, but that's what this presentation is about. Define it with examples.
9
What About Web 1.0? Well, Web 2.0 has been the only named and generalized version. Web 1.0 can be thought of as everything that was before Web 2.0 obsoleted it. Web 1.0 isn't gone, it's just getting older and nobody wants to use it anymore. An overview...

26
Beyond Web 2.0 I personally believe that Web 2.5 is upon us. Better quality. More asthetic. Faster and more robust. Let's go over a couple of examples...
27
Web 2.0 vs Web 2.5 Video Sharing YouTube, Low Resolution.Vimeo, vidoes in full HD goodness.
28
Web 2.0 vs Web 2.5 Personal Blogging A typical MySpace.com page.A typical wordpress.com page.
29
Web 2.0 vs Web 2.5 Music Downloads Proprietary and full of DRM.Open, free, and compatible.
30
Web 2.0 vs Web 2.5 Social Bookmarking Slashdot.org Social Bookmarking.Digg.com Social Bookmarking.
31
Web 2.0 vs Web 2.5 Information Sharing Experts Exchange is paid support. The answer is hidden until you pay. While eHow is free and the user willingly contributes.
32
Web 2.0 vs Web 2.5 Others... OS Independance Web 2.5 leaves everything compatible for Windows, Mac, and Linux/Unix OS's. Closed vs Openness Adobe just opened their.swf file format as an example. I believe that Sun Microsystems will become even friendlier to the Open Source ”movement” in the near future. More efficient and secure code Open source means there are more eyes to catch security flaws and improve upon the code.
33
Any Questions/Comments? Before concluding, I would like to open things up for discussions at this time.
34
Conclusions Web 2.0 is simply a concept, or idea, that tries to explain the changes happening in the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 puts more emphasis on user interaction and places you and me in the directors chair. We happily create, shape, and organize the Web without even realizing it. Web 2.0 is fun and exciting with changes happening very quickly sometimes right before our eyes.
