CELL CYCLE AND CANCER
2
- Cell Division Mitosis During mitosis, the cell’s nucleus divides into two new nuclei. One copy of the DNA is distributed into each of the two daughter cells.
3
- Cell Division The Cell Cycle
4
Length of the Cell Cycle How long does it take for a cell to go through one cell cycle? It all depends on the cell. A human liver cell, for example, completes one cell cycle in about 22 hours, as shown in the graph. Study the graph and then answer the following questions. - Cell Division
5
Length of the Cell Cycle –The longest curved arrow represents the cell’s interphase; the shortest represents cytokinesis; and the middle one represents mitosis. Reading Graphs: –What do the three curved arrows outside the circle represent? - Cell Division
6
Length of the Cell Cycle – Interphase Reading Graphs: In what stage of the cell cycle is the wedge representing growth? - Cell Division
7
Length of the Cell Cycle –10 hours Interpreting Data: –In human liver cells, how long does it take DNA replication to occur? - Cell Division
8
Length of the Cell Cycle – Interphase Drawing Conclusions: –In human liver cells, what stage in the cell cycle takes the longest time? - Cell Division
9
Structure of DNA The DNA molecule is shaped like a twisted ladder. How do the Nitrogen bases pair up? Adenine – Thymine Cytosine - Guanine
10
- Cell Division Replication of DNA What is it? When DNA make exact copy of itself Do the nitrogen bases have to match up? YES!! How? Adenine – Thymine Cytosine - Guanine
11
Sequencing Can you name the stages and phases of Cell Cycle? The Cell Cycle Cell grows, makes a copy of DNA. Chromosomes and spindle fibers form; nuclear envelope breaks down. Chromosomes line up across the center and attach to a spindle fiber. Centromeres split; chromatids separate and move to opposite ends. Chromosomes stretch out; new nuclear envelope forms around chromosomes. Cell pinches in two; each daughter cell has same number of identical chromosomes. - Cell Division- Cell Division Interphase Mitosis: Prophase Mitosis: Metaphase Mitosis: Anaphase Mitosis: Telophase Cytokinesis

What Is Cancer? Let’s find out You will work in groups of 3 Each group member will learn and then teach specific information about Cancer to the other team mates! 1 st member will teach: WHAT IS CANCER 2 nd member: TREATING CANCER 3 rd member: CANCER PREVENTION Each member will take notes Finally everyone will have to answer 3 specific questions – we will review them!!
