The Cell Cycle and MitosisCell Cycle
2
Chromosomes o Made of DNA o Each chromosome consists of two sister chromatids attached at a centromere
3
Chromosome
4
Cell Cycle o During the cell cycle, a cell grows, prepares for division, and divides to form 2 daughter cells, each with each of which then begins the cycle again.cell cycle o Order of cell cycle is: Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokensis (IPMATC)
6
Interphase Interphase – growth and regular cell activity. o Most of cell life is spent in Interphase. o longest period of the complete cell cycle o DNA replicates
7
Mitosis o Division of somatic cells. o 4 phases. o Remember Interphase is NOT part of Mitosis. Mitosis
8
Prophase o First stage of Mitosis o Chromatin condenses into chromosomes o Centrioles separate and spindle fiber begins to form. o Nuclear membrane breaks down
9
Prophase
10
Metaphase o Second Phase of Mitosis mm o Chromosomes line up in middle of cell. (meet in middle) o Each chromosome connects to spindle fiber at centromere.
11
Metaphase
12
Anaphase o Third Phase of Mitosis o Sister chromatids pull apart or away o individual chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell.
13
Anaphase
14
Telophase o Fourth and Final Stage of Mitosis o Chromosomes gather at opposite ends of cell, lose distinct shapes o Two new nuclear membranes form.
15
Telophase
16
Cytokinesis o NOT part of Mitosis o Division of cytoplasm after mitosis o Contractile ring tightens creating "cleavage furrow" o Each daughter cell has an identical set of duplicate chromosomes
