What this Unit is about Once this Unit has been completed you will be able to: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of digital media elements. Source, capture and store a range of media elements. Create, edit and manipulate digital media elements using software tools. Integrate digital media elements into a multimedia application.

How will you be Formally Assessed?
4 Assessment Outcomes over the next 18 weeks OUTCOME 1 - Closed Book - Multiple Choice Questions Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of digital media elements. Performance Criteria (a) Identify file formats for different media elements. (b) Describe properties of file formats. (c) Describe different types of file compression. (d) Describe copyright issues relating to media elements.

Formal Assessment OUTCOME 2 – Open Book - Portfolio / Project Contents / Logsheets Source, capture and store a range of media elements. Performance Criteria (a) Source a range of media elements from legitimate sources. (b) Capture media elements using appropriate devices. (c) Store files on appropriate media.

Formal Assessment(2) OUTCOME 3 – Open Book - Portfolio / Project Contents / Logsheets Create, edit and manipulate digital media elements using software tools. Performance Criteria (a) Create a range of media elements. (b) Edit a range of media elements. (c) Manipulate a range of media elements. (d) Select and use appropriate file formats for the storage of media elements.

Formal Assessment (3) OUTCOME 4 – Open Book - Portfolio / Project Contents / Logsheets Integrate digital media elements into a multimedia application. Performance Criteria (a) Select and use appropriate file formats for the media elements that match the multimedia application. (b) Acknowledge copyright for media elements. (c) Integrate media elements into a multimedia application. (d) Run the multimedia application

What is the Process that will be used?
Use a Project focus – “My Digital Media Project “ Using a Project Life Cycle Initiation – deciding when to start the Project Definition / Design – specifying what is to be done Planning – detailing exactly what you will be doing and when Implementation – putting into practice your plan Evaluation – Did I do what I said I was going to do and if so did it work? If I did it differently then why – the “learning cycle”

What is in the Project? The telling of an original story of your creation Examples include, but are not restricted to: An event in your life – award ceremony, wedding, etc. A day out at some activity e.g. Festival or gig An original fictional story - contemporary, historical or fantasy A true-life story (need to be careful here of the legal framework) Important that it is your creation and not anyone else's!

The Multi-media application
The creation of a multi-media application which will include the use of: Audio files Still Image files – both Bitmap & Vector Movie files 2d animation files The application can be created in: PowerPoint, MS Photo Story or equivalent

Use of Images Created by yourself And / or
Public-domain images from agreed sources e.g. Images from either sources will be Manipulated / edited by yourself

Adobe Photoshop Elements Microsoft Photostory Microsoft Paint Audacity Adobe Flash Others: Exercise - conduct a “software inventory” on your PCs In a Word document – list in a 2 column table all you think is relevant with their main functions of the software described
