Review What are the basic steps used to generate electricity? What are 2 similarities in how most electricity is generated? Describe the 2 main parts of a generator

Objective 7: Magnetism You should be able to: Identify (1-3) Define or Describe (3-6) Explain or discuss (5-8) Magnets Magnetic fields Earth‘s magnetic field Magnets and electricity

Objective 7: Vocabulary  generate  electron  magnet  magnetic field  domain  outer core  aurora borealis  electromagnet

What makes a magnet?  Spinning electrons generate a magnetic field  In most materials, the electrons are paired their magnetic fields cancel each other out.  In some metals the unpaired electrons are spinning in the same direction and are lined up = magnet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Khdi996HL5I iron, cobalt, and nickel

Electricity and Magnetism: Electromagnetic force  When electrons move electricity is produced  When electrons move a magnetic field is produced  Electrons moving in the copper wire makes a magentic field around the copper wire

Earth‘s magnetic field & auroras Moving liquid metal generates a magnetic field. The outer core of the Earth is made of molten iron and nickel that is in constant motion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SXgOWYyn84http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SXgOWYyn84 (magnetic field) Venus does not have a magnetic field Mars has a very weak magnetic field http://vimeo.com/21294655http://vimeo.com/21294655 (aurora)

 Earth’s magnetic field reverses approximately every 200,000 to 300,000 years (the last reversal took place 780,000 ya)  Currently, magnetic north is moving from Northern Canada towards Russia at about 64 kilometers per year (Flatow 2011).  The south magnetic pole is moving slower at 10-15km per year.  the magnetic field has weakened approximately 10% since the 19th century.
