Review What are the basic steps used to generate electricity? What are 2 similarities in how most electricity is generated? Describe the 2 main parts of a generator
2
Objective 7: Magnetism You should be able to: Identify (1-3) Define or Describe (3-6) Explain or discuss (5-8) Magnets Magnetic fields Earth‘s magnetic field Magnets and electricity
3
Objective 7: Vocabulary generate electron magnet magnetic field domain outer core aurora borealis electromagnet
4
What makes a magnet? Spinning electrons generate a magnetic field In most materials, the electrons are paired their magnetic fields cancel each other out. In some metals the unpaired electrons are spinning in the same direction and are lined up = magnet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Khdi996HL5I iron, cobalt, and nickel
5
Electricity and Magnetism: Electromagnetic force When electrons move electricity is produced When electrons move a magnetic field is produced Electrons moving in the copper wire makes a magentic field around the copper wire

Earth‘s magnetic field & auroras Moving liquid metal generates a magnetic field. The outer core of the Earth is made of molten iron and nickel that is in constant motion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SXgOWYyn84http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SXgOWYyn84 (magnetic field) Venus does not have a magnetic field Mars has a very weak magnetic field http://vimeo.com/21294655http://vimeo.com/21294655 (aurora)

Earth’s magnetic field reverses approximately every 200,000 to 300,000 years (the last reversal took place 780,000 ya) Currently, magnetic north is moving from Northern Canada towards Russia at about 64 kilometers per year (Flatow 2011). The south magnetic pole is moving slower at 10-15km per year. the magnetic field has weakened approximately 10% since the 19th century.
