The 7 Habits of Effective People

The 7 Habits Habit #1: Be Proactive Habit #2: Begin with the End in Mind Habit #3: Put First Things First Habit #4: Think Win-Win Habit #5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. Habit #6: Synergize Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw

Habit #1: Be Proactive “You have control over three things: what you think, what you say, and how you behave.” --Sonya Friedman

If you are a proactive person you are “response-able”. This means you don’t blame others for what happens to you. You choose your behaviour. Reactive: Something should be done about it. Pro-active: I’m going to solve this issue. Reactive: If only I had enough money, I would buy a new Playstation. Proactive: I want to buy a new Playstation, now how can I get the money for it?

Scenario How will you proactively respond to this situation? You are a student. One of the your long time friends has suddenly become ungrateful, rude, critical, and makes your life miserable. They are popular and you are afraid other people will stop being friends with you if you say anything.

Write your own mission statement Example- My mission is to: Laugh a lot Learn as much as I can Work hard at home and school Be kind to others

Habit #2: Begin with the End in Mind “If you decide to just go with the flow, you'll end up where the flow goes, which is usually downhill, often leading to a big pile of sludge and a life of unhappiness. You'll end up doing what everyone else is doing.”

Plan for your Future!!!! Make a goal that you can accomplish in a month. Make a goal that you can accomplish in a year. Make a goal that you can accomplish in three years.

Congratulations!!!!! You are now 22 years old. You have been selected to be interviewed by the news because you have done something amazing!!!! What will your friends say about you when the news interviews them????

Habit #3: Put First Things First “We become what we repeatedly do.” “We can avoid reality but we cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.” How good are you at doing important things first?

Why do successful people do things they don’t like to do?

The Prioritizer -Results: “Quadrant of Excellence”; “got it together”; look at everything they need to do and then prioritize to make sure that first things get done first and last things done last. The Procrastinator Example: -Put off doing things; do everything at the last minute; results in stress, anxiety, burnout. #3: The “Yes-Man” Example: -Tries to please other people; can’t say “no” because afraid of offending others; often caves to peer pressure. #4: The Slacker -Example: category of waste and excess; do too much of everything that is unproductive.; results: lack of responsibility, guilt, flakiness.

Journal Entry There can be many obstacles to achieving a goal. What has kept you from accomplishing a goal in the past? Fear? Time? Motivation? Lack of practice? Disorganization?

Habit #4: Think Win-Win “Instead of playing to win, I was playing not to lose. It reminds me of the story I once heard about two friends being chased by a bear, when one turned to the other and said, "I just realized that I don't need to outrun the bear; I only need to outrun you.”

Case Study Kim is a third-grade student. She has been having trouble in math, and tomorrow there is a big test. While she is in the living room studying for this test and trying to work out some problems, her little brother, Marshall, comes in from school. Marshall, who is in the first grade, has had a hard day at school, so he wants to have some fun and relax. He turns on some music and begins to sing and dance around. Kim wants quiet, and the music is disturbing her. They argue.

Marshall Gets What He Needs Marshall Doesn’t get what he Needs Kim gets what she Needs Win-WinWin-Lose Kim doesn’t get what she needs Lose-WinLose-Lose

ABCD Problem Solving A.Ask, “What’s the problem?” B.B. Brainstorm some solutions. C. Choose the best solution. Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each of the proposed solutions. Come to a consensus about which solution would be best. D. Do it. Once people have agreed on the best solution, then they need to try it.

Habit #5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood.

Habit #6: Synergize

Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw
