3 Learning Objectives This session is aimed at taking a glimpse of news as an essential product of journalism, the types of news and how news relates with mass media. This part will be the first discussion before entering the discussion on reporting and newscaster techniques. 3

4 NEWS of Today (1/6) The varied definitions of news Doug Newsom and James A Wollert, in Media Writing: News for the Mass Media: News is anything that people need to know. Delivering news means giving the required information to the people. 4

5 NEWS of Today (2/6) Paul De Massener, in Here’s The News: Unesco Associate, stated that: News is an important information that attracts attention from people. 5

6 NEWS of Today (3/6) William C Bleyer, in Newspaper Writing and Editing: News is the ‘hottest’ or the most update information that is picked by the journalists for people/ others to read. Or the journalists (can) make people read the information. 6

7 NEWS of Today (4/6) William S Maulsby, in Getting the News argues that: News can be defined as a neutral description of current events/ facts which may attract the readers. 7

8 NEWS of Today (5/6) As for Haris Sumadiria, in Jurnalistik Indonesia- Menulis Berita dan Feature, he referred to all the opinion on news and stated that: News is the fastest report on newest facts or ideas and the report is right, interesting, and important for the audience of newspaper, radio, television, or online media. 8

9 NEWS of Today (6/6) For example: The controversial news on KPK (Corruption Diminishing Commission) versus The Police and the Court that began on June 2009 not only have absorbed much of the ‘space’ in either broadcast and print media but also raised the pros and contras among people in Indonesia. 9

10 A Slight Reminder: Products of Journalism (1/8) In line with the description of journalistic profession whose work is closely related to the activities of searching, analyzing and preparing news, all the products of journalism carries out news value. 10

12 A Slight Reminder: Products of Journalism (3/8)  Editorials It is a form of news that provides official statement or how the media reacts on certain issues. 12

13 A Slight Reminder: Products of Journalism (4/8)  Caricature It is a method of providing news in a form of drawing, picture, or cartoon. The pictures contain message, opinion or social critiques and are conveyed in humorous ways. 13

14 A Slight Reminder: Products of Journalism (5/8) Is cartoon effective to convey messages? An effective cartoon is when the cartoon has successfully created fun (without feeling offense) to others, including the cartoonists, when they see/ read the pictures/ news. (Sudarta) 14

15 A Slight Reminder: Products of Journalism (6/8) In Indonesia, there are media which also convey their messages in cartoon/ caricature. For example: - The daily KOMPAS - The daily The Jakarta Post 15

16 A Slight Reminder: Products of Journalism (7/8)  Corner It is a ‘creative’ form (free style) of providing news by taking the lines from sources. The themes of corner can vary from social economics, politics, military, sports, environment, and so on. 16

17 A Slight Reminder: Products of Journalism (8/8)  Article It is a form of providing news by people writing news or private opinion on something that of their interest/ concern. The purpose of the writing is to inform, persuade, or to entertain. 17

18 News and Mass Media (1/5) Mass media is a means of communication that operate on a large scale, reaching and involving virtually everyone in a society to a greater or lesser degree. (McQuail’s: 1983:4). 18

20 News and Mass Media (3/5) The roles of news in informing, conveying issues and persuading communities by using media can be referred to Lazarsfeld (1941)’s approaches on media theory: 20

21 News and Mass Media (4/5)  Critical theory seeks to expose underlying problems and faults of media practice and to relate them in a comprehensive way to social issues, guided by certain values. 21

22 News and Mass Media (5/5)  Administrative Theory (applied theory) aims to connect an understanding of communication processes to solving practical problems of using mass communication more effectively. 22

23 Closing By having a slight look at the definition of news, the types of journalism products and how news relates with mass media, it is expected that the students will be ready to join the next session: the commercialization of media. 23
