Copyright and Fair Use for Faculty Annual Academic Copyright License

Annual Copyright License What is it? – A product of the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) – “…a single, comprehensive license that allows faculty, librarians, researchers and staff to reuse text-based copyrighted content for educational purposes, while respecting the intellectual property of others.”

Annual Copyright License What does it really mean? – If a resource is covered by the Annual Copyright License, you can make it available in any format to your students. – You can share multiple chapters from a book or multiple articles from a journal. – You can share the resources for multiple semesters.

Annual Copyright License How do I use it? 1. Go to: www.copyright.com Enter in the title or ISBN of the publication.

Annual Copyright License A box on the right will show if the resource is covered by the license, what permissions it covers, and if there are any additional terms to the coverage.

Annual Copyright License Currently includes over 1.6 million titles. Twenty new publishers are added each month. Participating publishers include: – Augsburg Fortress – Brill Academic Publications – Continuum Publishing Company – Oxford University Press – Westminster / John Knox Press

The Rules You can use multiple chapters from a book, but you still can’t reproduce the entire thing. Some publishers may put additional restrictions on use. Scan should always be made from an original owned by the Seminary or the instructor. If you are unsure if a work is covered or if there is a publisher that you would like to see included on the list, let Kristy know.

Case Studies Can I make copies of two chapters from a covered work and pass them out to my class? Yes – multiple chapters are fine under this license

Case Studies There is a resource I use every semester that I want to put on my course portal, and it is covered under the license. Can I use it? Yes – multiple semesters are allowed if a resource is covered by the license.
