History of AGS The formation of AGS began on June 11, 1942, when a group of physicians interested in advancing medical care for older adults met to form a specialty society dedicated to geriatric medicine. In June 1994, AGS Board of Directors held a long-range planning retreat. The decision was reached to pursue an expansion of the Society through the active recruitment of all geriatrics health care professionals and a direct engagement with the public. GSA History The Society began in 1939 when a group of 24 scientists and physicians formed the Club for Research on Ageing. The charter set the tone and composition of the Society as a multidisciplinary enterprise to not only promote the study of aging, but also to encourage exchanges among researchers and practitioners from various disciplines related to gerontology.
