VOCABULARY Foundational elements— Basic ideas that are at the root of our government and provide a base for the government’s structure Example: Foundational elements are to a government as bread is to a sandwich. Write a definition in your own words. Provide an example or comparison. Picture is optional.

GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS Add a short explanation/ caption of the organizer.

PARAGRAPHS Write a paragraph of 5 to 7 sentences related to the key vocabulary of Unit 1. You need to underline any key vocabulary you use in your paragraphs. The United States government is a democracy. There are two types of democracy. The first is called direct democracy and was started by the Greeks. However, you had to be a land owner and a male to participate. The second form which is used today is called indirect or representative democracy. In this form of democracy the citizens vote for the individuals they want to represent them in the government. Indirect democracy is the more common form today because it can better serve large populations.

POLITICAL CARTOONS AND/ OR PICTURES You can print off or draw your cartoons and/or pictures. You must write an explanation under the cartoon/ picture. This cartoon’s message is related to the military of Egypt taking over control of the government. They are currently a government in transition from a dictatorship to a “democracy” and now a military coup has attempted to take over. This cartoonist is showing the lack of rule of law by the government by depicting the military and the government leaders as one.

BIBLIOGRAPHY List the websites of your information. List the notes (Topic, Day, Date) of your information. Bibliography Page 3: “Evaluating Symbols…” Unit 1 Day 2, Friday August 9 Page 5: http://www.cagle.com/news/egypt- morsi/page/9/. http://www.cagle.com/news/egypt- morsi/page/9/ Page 7: Class Discussion on Tuesday August 20 th ; Affirmative Action and the concept of Equality vs. Fairness

EXAMPLE OF ONE WAY YOU CAN ORGANIZE… Each page corresponds to a different key vocabulary concept. You would have some with cartoons, graphic organizers, paragraphs, etc. In the example, you would get credit for a definition and a cartoon. DICTATORSHIP A government where the people have little say or control in the government Example: oligarchy (small group in charge; Egypt’s military led government) and autocracy (1 person in charge; North Korea) This cartoon is showing the lack of choice by the citizens of North Korea. The next leader is already chosen without a free election by the citizens.

START GOING THROUGH YOUR NOTES… Using a highlighter mark the parts of your notes that contain information you can use for your assessment. All work must be rewritten. Do not rip notes out and staple them together. Let’s make things neat, complete and show what you know. This is an assessment not just another assignment.
