History of South African Political System
Political system was run by a kingdom Small group had all power (oligarchy) No separation of powers Officials appointed by the king are responsible for criminal justice King was chief executive, chief law-maker, and chief judge Used trade and the army to stay in power

South Africa Becoming Democratic
Lessening of trade decreased power within the kingdom voting aged decreased to 18 so National Party increased majority Unity between English and African could be achieved by being republic Decided South Africa will try to become republic while staying in the common wealth

Continued Referendum was help in response to South Africa becoming republican. White’s that lived there voted for republic and black’s were not allowed to vote. Majority won and republican South Africa was established May

Contains a multi party system (Roman-Dutch civil law, English common law, and customary law) Everyone 18 and over are eligible to vote (universal suffrage0) Consists and follows the constitution Non discrimination Individual rights and freedoms President Jacob Zuma elected for a five year term and is eligible for a second term( next elections 2014) Abolished capital punishment in 1980 Legislative branch: elects 10 members from each of the nine provincial legislatures for five year terms Judiciary system is independent

Article South African businesses remain silent on political donations Large companies are donating money to their preferred party in South Africa More money results in more voters Controversy on if donors have special privileges if the party they donated to win or if it is just foe support.
