Volga - the longest river in European Russia Ob - one of many rivers which flow northward Amur - the only river in Siberia which doesn = t flow northward. Its valley is a food-producing area.

Mineral deposits - Russia and the republics have almost every mineral used in industry. Energy Resources - the Volga provides hydroelectricity, Russia and nearly all the republics have natural gas and oil.

Slavs - the Ethnic group (nationality) which is in the majority in Russia, Belarus, and the Ukraine - -they tend to be Christians

Turks - the nationality which makes up the majority of Uzbeks, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Tatars, and Turks. - they tend to be Muslims Caucasians - The people of Armenia and Georgia are from this ethnic group, they are Christians and the Armenians were the victims of a genocide attempt early in the 20 th century.

struggles since 1990 – Russia had a free election an attempted coup against Gorbachev failed, the Soviet republics declared their independence from the U.S.S.R. The U.S.S.R. simply ceased to exist. The Confederation of Independent States (CIS) has replaced the U.S.S.R. But is very weak. All of the former republics are switching from communism to capitalism and from dictatorships to democracy, it has been a rough switch.
