Shell Mera, Ecuador The town of Shell-Mera was first established in 1937 as a Shell Oil Company base. It consisted of a few shacks and an air strip that was in use while the Shell Company prospected for oil. The base was located near some hostile Indian tribes. After the death of several employees from Indian attacks, the company considered the base too dangerous and abandoned it in 1948. After the Shell Oil Company withdrew from Shell-Mera, the Missionary Aviation Fellowship occupied the town, because of the value of the air strip to their missionary work and because of the closeness to Quito. It was the home base of MAF pilots Nate Saint and John Keenan.

In 1956, Nate Saint and 4 other missionaries went missing. They had been trying to reach a remote Indian tribe. After conducting several making aerial reconnaissance missions they landed, and were killed by members of the Huaorani tribe who threw their bodies in the Curaray River.

Opening a hospital in that area had been a dream of Nate Saint. In 1958, the Hospital Vozandes Del Oriente opened its doors on land that Saint had donated and worked on before his death.
