2 Franklin Delano Roosevelt Elected in 1932 Two-term Governor from New York Promised the American public a “New Deal.” to get out of the depression The Hundred Days, beginning of his presidency, Congress passed 15 major laws

3 Help for banks Emergency Banking Relief Act – declared a bank holiday when people were unable to withdraw money (which meant no bank failures) Treasury department now inspects all banks *** restored faith in the banking system ***

4 Fireside chats Radio speeches designed to keep the public informed FDR used clear, simple language 1 st President to use media to communicate with the public (very effective)

5 Glass-Steagall Banking Act Law passed by Congress that created the FDIC (Federal Depositors Insurance Corporation) Helped to continue to restore faith in banks Federal Securities Act Regulated the stock market, designed to prevent another crash Today know as the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission)

6 Civilian Conservation Corps Helped young men (18-25) go back to work Many different jobs, manual labor ** Gave them confidence and self- respect $30/month, free room and board “We can take it.”

7 National Industrial Recovery Act Developed to promote business growth Ensured fair business practices

8 Courtpacking FDR attempted to have the Constitution of the United States amended to include 6 more Supreme Court justices (which he would get to choose so they could approve his New Deal programs)

9 Works Progress Administration Biggest direct relief program ($ to people) Helped build roads, bridges, streets, libraries, and hospitals. Also put artists to work making informational posters
