Video Conferencing in the Classroom SUNY BROOME COMMUNITY COLLEGE Champagne Solutions with Kool Aid Money Fermin Romero III

Actually - Welcome to:  Leather Sheath Making  With Drew Tucci

Today we’ll cover  Problems we faced  What led us to even need a more than one solution  Solutions we explored  Both software and hardware  Everyone has heard of at least one piece of hardware and at least one company providing video solutions.  Solutions that worked  We tried a few. Which was right for us?  On going support  What we are doing campus wide to make sure we are:  S upportable  S ustainable  S caleable  Future development  What are we looking at next?

Problem 1  Requests for video conferencing has gone up substantially in the past two years  Most importantly – Board of Trustee Meetings required remote video conferencing during the winter months.  We needed a S table, S upportable, S ustainable and S caleable solution.  Getting users to “buy in”

Problem 2  Users have a certain idea of what multi point video conferencing should look like  “It’s easy at home, so it should be easy at work right?”  “This can’t be that hard”  “I can call the same day I want it setup right?”

Problem 3  How/Where do we set this up?  SKYPE rooms  Special SKYPE rooms go largely unused  Although it seemed easier, support was harder  Support, Space and Supplies are unlimited limited

Software Solutions we explored  GoToMeeting  Skype  BlueJeans  Fuze [formerly Fuzebox]  Polycom (desktop real presence)  Polycom (Group 700 series)  Collaborate  Google Hangouts  A Few Others  There’s hundreds now, right?

GoToMeeting  The first solution we had on campus.  Used for board meetings  This wasn’t a bad solution. It worked for almost a year before we started looking elsewhere.  It required 100% tech support.  It should have been easy. But it wasn’t…  The interface for video didn’t look as elegant as we wanted  which was important for our board meetings

Skype  The eponym for all video conferencing  Everyone’s heard of it  Most everyone has/had an account  It’s pretty easy to figure out  No one knows their username.  No One  Requires some logistics  Because people think they know how it works they don’t test  Still a great solution for classroom video conferencing  “Hey, can I do a Skype in my classroom?”  Yes. I’ll set it up.

BlueJeans - http://bluejeans.com/  High Quality Video  “system agnostic”  Supposedly this works but I never got a Polycom to work  Elegant interface  Click to join  Decent support  Expensive $$$

Polycom RealPresence Desktop  VERY Inexpensive  Less than $100 per user [perpetual]  http://bit.ly/1dyPgn7 http://bit.ly/1dyPgn7  Free for mobile users  High quality video on all platforms  Very good looking  Invasive Mobile App?  Excellent backup

Polycom Group Series (700)  Easy to use  Hardware and software all in one  Only point to point  Not agnostic  When paired with RealPresence Desktop or Mobile this is a good solution.  Expensive up front –  I don’t think you have to buy the service agreement.  We didn’t (shhh)

Collaborate  Not super awesome [for strictly video conferencing]  Video seems to be a second seat to the desktop sharing  This has it’s use and we have it on campus but it’s not an all in one solution

Google Hangouts  Not pro level  Not an authorized SUNY Google App?  Users not comfortable using their account  Not even used as a backup

Fuze - https://www.fuze.com/plans  Download it from the play store or app store [now]  Relatively Inexpensive Relatively Inexpensive  “system agnostic”  I have gotten the Polycom bridging to work once but it’s not as easy as I had hoped. It’s also an extra cost per year.  FTE Based Plans  We have not implemented this but I like the idea  Elegant Interface  Allows Appointed host  This is a bit of a “cheat” to hosting a meeting Try it now – Join FUZE Meeting: 293-57-402

Fuze - https://www.fuze.com/plans  Recording built in  Quick to setup  I can send just a few sentences of plain English instructions to users  This is our current implemented solution  They just acquired “Live Minutes”  Now rolling out “Fuze Spaces” https://www.fuze.com/fuze-spaces  Think Collaborate Try it now – Join FUZE Meeting: 293-57-402
