2 Enabling Learning through ILT
A spectrum of possibilities The following diagram illustrates the variety of styles in which electronic media and resources can enable and support effective teaching and learning

3 Enabling Learning through ILT
Traditional teaching tool ILT can be used to supplement a traditional style of teaching. PowerPoint presentations with a digital projector, interactive whiteboards, word processed handouts and storage of results on a spreadsheet are all effective ways of enriching a course.

4 Enabling Learning through ILT
Blended learning Traditional teaching tool A ‘mixed-mode’ approach can be achieved with ILT, creating a planned programme involving a blend of traditional means with stored resources, internet research, computer based study, and online communications. Blackboard is ideal for this approach to learning.

5 Enabling Learning through ILT
Differentiated pace Blended learning Traditional teaching tool ILT can make it possible for learners to progress through the programme of study at their own pace. It can also support the process of tracking their progress and strengthen the provision of individual support.

6 Enabling Learning through ILT
Differentiated programme Differentiated pace Blended learning Traditional teaching tool Individual learning plans can be crafted and delivered using ILT, allowing learners to pursue the main programme with built in support or extension activities.

7 Enabling Learning through ILT
Differentiated programme Differentiated pace Anytime learning Blended learning Traditional teaching tool Network facilities and computer provision enable learners to access programmes of study outside the timetabled hours, extending the learning opportunities.

8 Enabling Learning through ILT
Differentiated programme Differentiated pace Blended learning Anytime learning Traditional teaching tool Remote learning: anytime, anywhere Only ILT can make access to courses possible at all times. It can also deliver the course to new locations like home and the workplace. Through systems like Blackboard it is also realistic to enrich the course with online support and communication with other learners.

9 Enabling Learning through ILT
Differentiated programme Differentiated pace Blended learning Anytime learning Traditional teaching tool Remote learning: anytime, anywhere Supporting learning ILT also supports the main study programme through provision of mail and internet, CBT, ECDL, Libraries and Flexible Learning Areas.

10 Engaging ILT in Learning
Traditional Blended Remote Supporting Anytime Differentiation Engaging ILT in the learning process can lead to less intervention and, more learner autonomy. Less direct teaching allows opportunity for more support and enabling.

11 Engaging ILT in Learning
Traditional Blended Remote Supporting Anytime Differentiation While it may be helpful to assess one’s teaching style against the fan, it is important to avoid ranking the elements. Position on the fan is not significant – there is no suggestion that any element is better or more important – it is the extent to which we can successfully combine these forms that will make ILT effective in benefiting the learner.

12 Engaging ILT in Learning
Traditional Blended Remote Supporting Anytime Differentiation The question should not be, “Which is right?” but “Which is right in this situation?” Keep in mind that ILT involves using appropriate technology. A more important question is, “What suits the learner’s needs”
