1. Static Eliminators Po 210 Issues

2. Register Po 210 with Tufts EH&S Static eliminators may be used in research laboratories as part of analytical balances, or to neutralize static charges on membrane filters. These devices may contain Po 210, a radioactive material which emits alpha radiation. If a device contains Po 210, it is usually sold under a general license issued by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Generally licensed items which contain radioactive material must be registered with the MA Radiation Control Program. 3. Handling & change out of the devices These devices often contain 500 microcuries of Po 210. They are often only useful for 1-2 years due to the decay of the Po 210, which has a half live of only 138 days. Po 210 emits alpha radiation. Prevent damage to the device. Do not ingest or inhale Po 210. Wearing gloves is recommended when handling Po 210 containing devices. When ordering a device containing Po 210, arrangements should be made in advance to transfer it back to the vendor when the device is longer useful to the lab. This saves disposal costs.

4. Security of Po 210 Sources Even though these are generally licensed, users must ensure that the radioactive material is not lost or stolen. Static eliminators are often small items, 3 x 1 x ¼ inch in size. Ensure the items are not lost or misplaced. Lost devices must be reported to regulatory agencies.

5. User Responsibilities Periodically verify that the source is still in its storage/use location. Store loose static eliminators or other radioactive material containing devices in a locked cabinet when not in use. To increase control, consider placing analytical balances that contain radioactive material away from the door to the laboratory. Allow access to authorized persons only.
