Background 1996 – Launched by Nasjonalt læremiddelsenter as part of the Governmental action plan “IT I norsk utdanning, plan for 1996-1999” Launched as a static page 1997 – Participant in the launch of the European Schoolnet. Interactive services such as discussion groups, bulletin boards where added to Skolenettets services. 1998 – Major services, like e-mail (“skolepost”) added. 2000 – Relaunched as a part of the new action plan “IKT i norsk utdanning 2000-2003).
5
Status rapport More than 40 different services have been launched since 1996. User groups have their own startup pages with access to user specific services. The use of Skolenettet has been incorporated into school curricula and teachers learning programs. Services available in Norwegian, New-Norwegian, Sámi, Finnish, German, English and French.
6
Usage statistics On average 3300 different user per day. More than 230 000 page views per day. 71.7 % of the users use the general startup page. Groups pages have similar design and appearance. Confuses users because of similarity. Skolenettet is mostly used after normal school hours. Children and students prefer to use other computer tools. Teachers are the main users!
7
Information Infrastructure Mixed Information storage architectures. Information is stored hierarchal, often combined with sequential or a network structure. Many standards have been in use, or are in use now. It is challenging to get the overall sense of the Information Infrastructure.
8
Physical and technical platform Hardware: Runs on 7 Linux based servers with different dedicated tasks. Connected to the Internet as a globally available web portal. Follows www-standards. Software: The non-standardized program iMaker is used for publishing information. Follows www-standards. Today 25 external web based services are based on and physically connected to Skolenettet’s technical platform.
9
Metadata All information is marked with Metadata Mainly based on the Dublin core Standard Additional metadata stored in accordance with standards developed by the European Schoolnet. Metadata is used by Skolenettet’s search engines to find the right information and services to the different users.
10
Information presentation Little metadata is presented to the users. Information is presented to the users thru an Internet Browser Interface. Skolenettet is using the latest HTML standards Doesn’t use plug-ins or other additional programs.
11
Why Skolenettet is an II part 1 Installed base: Current 2 nd generation was built upon the old static web application. Standardized: It’s built upon the Dublin Core and European Schoolnet metadata standards. Runs on the same platform as 25 connected school network. Heterogeneous: It consists of different technologies and user groups that are aligned.
12
Shared: It’s is shared by a large educational community, consisting of different user groups both nationally and internationally. Open: There are no limits on the number of users. Anyone who want to access the network, can do so. Some services requires users to log in. Enabling: Metadata and the documents storage structure makes the specter of services easily available for the users. This way more users will find the tools they demand and take advantage of using them. Socio-technical: It is an educational and Internet enabled portal. Why Skolenettet is an II part 2
