Welcome to day 4 2, Sept 8, 2009 Objectives SWBAT identify homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures SWBAT Identify elements and compounds See your new groups and assigned seats Catalyst 1.What are some things that matter in your life? 2.How do you define or describe these things that matter?
3
Welcome to Unit 2 What does it f Oh, it matters because…. Chemistry is the STUDY OF MATTER
4
Agenda Catalyst/Who has to take the test Welcome to Unit 2 - What Does It Matter? Lecture Whiteboards! Exit Ticket

Unit 2: MATTER matters
8
Matter Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space
9
What is MASS? Mass is a measurement of HOW MUCH STUFF is in something Mass is the amount of matter in an object
10
Which has a greater mass?
11
What do we use to measure mass? We use a balance and measure mass in grams Triple Beam Balance
12
Mass is Constant! All matter has mass. The mass of an object is constant. This means it does not change if it is moved from one place to the next. For example, your mass is the same whether you are on Earth or the Moon!
13
FYI! Mass is NOT Weight! Weight is the force produced by gravity acting on mass Because gravity can change from one location to another, the weight of an object can change
14
Takes up space? All matter has VOLUME Volume is the amount of space an object takes up
15
Which has a smaller volume?
16
Matter Substance – matter that has a uniform and definite composition, substances contain only one kind of matter.
17
Matter Element or “Pure Element” - substance which cannot be further broken down into other substances. (consists of atoms of only one element – gold (Au), oxygen (O 2 ), Iron (Fe) - This will be anything on the periodic table
18
Matter Compound - a chemical substance formed from two or more elements. For example: - Dihydrogen Monoxide (water, H 2 O) - Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) - Iron II Sulfate (Fe 3 SO 4 )
19
Matter Mixture - a blend of two or more kinds of matter. 2 types of mixtures:
20
Matter Heterogeneous mixture - no definite composition/properties. (Ex. - salad or pizza) “Easy to separate”
21
Matter Homogeneous mixture -have a uniform composition/properties throughout the sample. AKA Solutions. (Ex. - salt water, glass) “hard to separate.”
22
Matter Solution - homogeneous mixture – a substance (solutes) dissolves into another substance (solvent). Ex. Salt (solute) dissolving into water (solvent)
23
Individual Whiteboard Identify the following as a heterogeneous, homogeneous mixture, element, or compound. –Raisin Bran –Bronze –Platinum –Pure water –Kool-Aid
24
Element, compound, heterogeneous mixture or homogeneous mixture? Oxygen
25
Element, compound, heterogeneous mixture or homogeneous mixture? H 2 O
26
Element, compound, heterogeneous mixture or homogeneous mixture? Salt water
27
Element, compound, heterogeneous mixture or homogeneous mixture? NaCl
28
Element, compound, heterogeneous mixture or homogeneous mixture? Jelly and water
29
Element, compound, heterogeneous mixture or homogeneous mixture? Kool-Aid and Water
30
Element, compound, heterogeneous mixture or homogeneous mixture? Peanut butter and Jelly
31
Element, compound, heterogeneous mixture or homogeneous mixture? Salt Water
32
Element, compound, heterogeneous mixture or homogeneous mixture? Oil and water
33
Matter Take out a blank sheet of paper with a partner. As a group you will be constructing a concept bubble map of the following terms - Automobiles example
34
Matter Here is an example
35
Matter MatterHomogenous SubstanceHeterogeneous ElementMixture CompoundSolution Provide examples for: Homogeneous; heterogeneous, element, and compound
36
Classification of Matter MATTER SUBSTANCES: Cannot be broken without changing its identity ELEMENT: Simplest form of matter; cannot be broken down. COMPOUND: Substance in which elements are chemically combined. MIXTURES: Combination of substances in which the identity of each substance is retained. Homogeneous Mixture: Mixture is the same throughout. Ex. Carbon, Gold, Sodium Ex. Water, CO 2, sugar Ex. Gatorade, Air, Steel Heterogeneous Mixture: Mixture differs throughout. Ex. Granite, Vegetable soup
37
Exit Ticket (1) Identify the following as an element, compound, homogeneous mixture, heterogeneous mixture. (a)carbon, (b) Gatorade, (c) water, (d) salad (2) What is the difference between a compound and a mixture? (3) What is the definition of matter?
