Geographic Understandings SS2G1 The student will locate major topographical features of Georgia and will describe how these features define Georgia’s surface. a. Locate all the geographic regions of Georgia: Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau.

5 Blue Ridge Mountain Region
The Blue Ridge Region occupies the northeastern portion of Georgia. It consists of an irregular sequence of mountains, ridges, and basins. Portions of the Piedmont region extend into this province as well.

6 Blue Ridge Mountains The Blue Ridge Region is a part of the Appalachian Mountain Range. This Region includes Brasstown Bald Peak which is the highest point in Georgia.

Climate – Mild summers / Cold Winters Great amounts of rainfall Agriculture – Apples, Corn & other Vegetables

10 The Piedmont Region contains a series of rolling hills and occasional isolated mountains. Rivers and ravines are found throughout this region. The dominant trees include oaks, hickories, Short-leaf Pine, and Loblolly Pine.

11 Piedmont Region The capital of Georgia is located here: Atlanta.

Climate – Hot summers / Mild Winters Agriculture – Cotton, Soybeans and Wheat

15 Coastal Plain Region The Coastal Plain Region is a low, flat region of well-drained, gently rolling hills and poorly drained flat woods. The Coastal Plains are divided into an upper and lower plains. The upper plain is the agriculture part. The lower plain is the coastal part that includes the Atlantic Ocean and swamps.

18 Coastal Plains Climate & Agriculture
Climate – Hot Summers / Mild Winters Agriculture – Turpentine The land is used for pasture of pine trees since soil is not fertile.

19 Valley and Ridge Region
The Valley and Ridge Region occupies most of northwestern portion of Georgia. It includes the Chickamauga Valley, Armuchee Ridges, and the Great Valley. There are flat farmlands that pasture fields of grain, cows and orchards of apples. Most of the land is covered in forest.

Climate – Mild Summers / Mild Winters Agriculture – Corn, Soybeans, Wheat, Cotton Land used to grow hardwood and pine timber

22 Appalachian Plateau Region
The Appalachian Plateau region, this mountainous region is found in extreme northwestern Georgia. Its most prominent features are Lookout and Sand Mountains.

25 Appalachian Plateau Climate & Agriculture
Climate – Mild Summers / Mild Winters Agriculture – Primary land use is for hardwood forest and pastures. A small amount of corn and soybeans are grown.

How are they different from one another? Where is each region located? Can anyone show me the differences in the regions? Can anyone explain the differences between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Coastal Plain? What would happen to the crops in the Blue Ridge Mountains & Ridge and Valley regions if the state of Georgia did not receive any rain? If you could choose which region of Georgia to live in, which region would you choose and why?
