Who created it? Scientists from the Digital Equipment Corporation’s Research lab in Palo Alto, CA When was it created? Spring of 1995, Google in 1998, and Yahoo as an internet guide in 1994. First actual search engine on the Web

What was its purpose, when it was created? Was to search the whole web for every, single word on every HTML page on the internet in a fast, searchable index What is it's purpose now? To provide access to information to the global community

What does it do best? It was the first search- engine to do a multi- lingual search; includes Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Also, Babel Fish was the Web’s first Internet machine translation device that would translate whole words and phrases from English to Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, or Russian How does it work? Creators at AltaVista put is as to search every word on the web very fast and easy Was the first ever search engine to launch Image, Audio, and Video search capabilities Most of the search results that people get go to Yahoo results because AltaVista is run by Yahoo

How big or popular is it? AltaVista is one of the oldest search engines and one of the most trusted search engines. Polls say that AltaVista is 2 nd in popularity behind Google Where is it based? AltaVista’s Headquarters are located in Sunnyvale, California; right outside of San Francisco

How does it make money to stay going? Currently, I can’t find out how they make money… How healthy is it? AltaVista is very healthy and should always be healthy because of the time it’s been on the Web and the number of people that use AltaVista
