6 © Center for Companies That Care, 2004 Agenda for Day Urban Prep Mentors UCW Mentors 9AM9:30AMArrive at respective elementary school Check in at main office and will be directed to meeting space. Find your student at meeting space. 9:15- 10:30 9:45-11Receive your classroom assignment. Join your student in reading to a small group of elementary school students (Grades 3-5). Approx. 4 AIM High students in each classroom. Younger students will rotate to next “storyteller” half way through. Donate books to classroom at end. 10:30-1111-11:30Return to meeting space for debrief. Depart following debrief.

7 © Center for Companies That Care, 2004 What to expect AIM High students will be trained to “story tell” by a professional storyteller. Some students did this last year, but not everyone and not freshman. Students took a mature attitude towards this last year and enjoyed acting as mentors to younger students.

8 © Center for Companies That Care, 2004 Your Role To accompany your student and read with them to their small group of students. To remind the classroom teachers to break their kids up into small groups in corners of the room so each AIM High student has a small group to read to. To remind the classroom teacher to have the younger students rotate to the next storyteller half way through. To keep your eye on the clock to return to the meeting space with your students at 10:30AM (Urban Prep) or 11AM (UCW) and remember to donate the books to the classroom.

9 © Center for Companies That Care, 2004 Storytelling Tips Announce title of book, author and illustrator. Explain the author writes book. Illustrator does pictures. Sometimes author is also illustrator. Modify your voice to tell the story. Sound happy when the book is happy, sad when the story is sad, scared when the book is scary. Make sure your voice is LOUD ENOUGH so everyone can hear you. It’s great to be silly too. Look at the children while you’re reading. Show the pictures while you read--hold book facing children and rotate so everyone can see. Takes a little practice but soon becomes second nature. Use gestures and movement to make the story more interesting. Ask them to look at the cover illustration and guess what the book is about Ask them to imagine different endings for the story or what they think will happen next.
