2 Solitary Play First stage of play Starts in infancy Involves exploring the environment, discovering new things and learning from them Continues throughout toddlerhood Involves playing alone and completely absorbed in what they are doing without noticing others

3 The student will be able to identify the four sequences of play and identify children in each sequence Parallel Play Common with toddlers but can happen at any age Children play with similar toys, observing each other Children do not play with each other, they play next to each other (parallel)

4 The student will be able to identify the four sequences of play and identify children in each sequence Associative Play Occurs at about 3-4 years old Involves loosely structured activities Child play with each other but do not work together in an organized manner to create something

5 The student will be able to identify the four sequences of play and identify children in each sequence Cooperative Play As social and emotional development matures, children are able to play cooperatively together Emerges around 4-5 years old Play has an organized structure Children will communicate with each other to work towards a common goal Children learn respect for others property Children realize they need permission to use others toys and are more willing to share

7 ACTIVITY Using the papers provided make a “Types of Play” booklet. Each page of your book should have a Title Definition-IN YOUR OWN WORDS! Illustration of an example of that type of play
