Chemistry Revision Session 8
2
Naming Alkenes Name this alkene And what about (CH 3 ) 2 CHCHCH 2 ?
3
Isomerism What type of isomerism is this? Why does it occur?
4
Mechanisms! Explain how bromine reacts with ethene (4 marks) Identify the mechanism type!
5
Polymers Draw a section of polymer chain to show the structure of poly(propene) Draw a section of the polymer chain obtained from the monomer 1-chloroprop-1-ene! Identify the intermolecular forces present in each polymer Which would be more flexible? Why?
6
More on IMF Why does H 2 O have a higher boiling point than H 2 S? Include a diagram in your answer for water!! What is the shape of H 2 S?
7
Test! How can I differentiate between ethane and hex-3-ene in the laboratory?
8
Sorry Couldn’t resist ONE trick question- in the lab ethene will be a gas, where as, of course, hex-3-ene is a liquid. The more sensible question to ask is how to differentiate between hex-3-ene and hexane! Add bromine water- which will be decolourised by hex-3-ene (orange colourless)
9
Definitions Explain the difference between thermosetting and thermoplastic ploymers What is a co-polymer What is the difference between a crystalline and a amorphous region of a polymer How will this affect its properties?
10
Manipulating polymers Explain how each of the following will affect a polymers strength- Adding a side group to the monomer- eg CH 3 Increasing the chain length of the polymer Substituting a Cl atom for an H atom in the monomer Substituting that Cl for an amine group
11
Manipulating Polymers Give 2 other ways I can increase the strength of a polymer Again- boring though it may be- justify your answer!
12
Manipulating polynmers Cross-linking Increasing stereo-regularity
13
Alcohols
14
Which is/are secondary alcohols and which is/are tertiary alcohols? Name the product if I oxidise- Name the functional group State the reagents and conditions
15
How would it be different if I oxidised ethanol using mild conditions? And if I spent too long drinking coffee (surely not) and came back too late I would have made which compound?
16
Dissolving Polymers The polymer with the repeating unit shown below dissolves well in water. Why? H OH ----C—C------ H H n
17
Final definitions Define the terms:- Elimination Electrophile
